About a year and a 1/2 ago, I made a knife for a customer in Sweden to use for his moose hunts.
That all went well.
Then last Fall I got a new email from him. It began saying how he was in the market for a companion to the one I already made.
He continued:
".....I was initially thinking of a smaller knife to the Moose Hunter you made for me, but I have already acquired one of those elsewhere while waiting for you, and field dressing the 2 moose I shot this fall convinced me that when taking care of animals that size by yourself, a good solid knife with a bit of reach is a damn good thing. The one you made for me does the job beautifully but I figure having a 2nd knife is not a burden. So I think maybe a "big brother" is the way to go. I can already hear the "bigger is not better" jokes starting up in the hunting cabin!!
Cheers, and I hope the new year treats you well.
Vaughan"
After some lengthy discussions, back and forth, we arrived at what I post today.
I wanted to do some higher layer count on the initial Ws stacking, so beginning with a 12 layer billet, I quadrupled it to 48 before doing the bias "squish" and then 4x4x4 on the crushed layers. For 64 layers Crushed Ws.
Then I laddered the forged /profiled blade with some new ladder dies I put together with the assistance of my buddy Brian Thie.
Hot blued the 7"+ blade, SS guard and stabilized Feather Walnut in a take-down assembly.
My only regret is that I won't be there to help him get it bloody!!!
