Ive been doing a lot of wood work and thick brush camping lately and have been carrying a old ka-bar my dad gave me and a really cheap machete... now it gets the job done but i was looking for a newer larger blade to make my life easier and more enjoyable im looking for a knife with a blade around 9-12 in decently thick so it can baton and chop wood and price isnt a huge factor not going into high end customs since it will be used and i wouldnt want to use one of those anyways so and recomendations would be awesome

Since you've got a KaBar maybe try out a Becker. How about a BK9 or a BK4 both large blades great for outdoors chopping and such. The 9 is my next one. Also a great choice would be an ESEE Junglas great warranty big blade one of my favorites.

I've got an old WWII era American bayonet that is quite entertaining as a chopping/batoning knife. At 10 inches long and 1/4 of an inch thick, it's virtually unbreakable and has the weight to chop like a hatchet. I've hacked down 3-4 inch thick trees with it before.

I don't know how easy (or hard :P) one of these would be to find, but it would most certainly do the job. And you'll get to be the only guy out of all your friends who has one :D

The Scrapyard 911 just got released 9.25in blade 1/4" thick, full lifetime warranty. You can buy a sheath from the website for $20 or get a nicer kydex one made from one of the kydex benders here on BF.

Not sure if I'm allowed to post price here since Scrapyard doesn't have a subforum here, though the other two companies do (Busse and Swamprat) but its under $200 including shipping (you can find order info and price at their website), its also 52100 steel so it will hold an edge longer than 1095 and is tougher, I also recommend taking a look at the ESEE Junglas 10" blade and 3/16in thick, with an excellent kydex sheath and unconditional warranty, with micarta handles if you prefer that, the Junglas (including kydex sheath) can be found around the price of the 911 maybe 10-20 more.

i see that busse are rather expensive for me to use... i just would have a hard time to use it but what about swamprat?

Have a look at RTAK 2,i have one and its a good blade, get a kukri (Himalayan Imports),a BK 9 or the said 911,all of these can be bought under 200$ except maybe a really large kukri (and i mean large,1/2 inch thick 18-22 inches long large). The options are out there so you can pretty much get anything,i have a BK9,RTAK 2,Outcast,a 20 inch 3/8 kukri and a Kabar big brother along with 6 cheap ish machetes, large blades are lots of fun,try as many knives as you want since this is a hobby and if you're not enjoying it then whats the point?

The esee 6 looks awesome... especially in the lime green... Falkniven S1 is also one i want to get... both great looking blades

As far as price Busse is like the parent company to the other two (scrapyard ran by Jerry Busse's brother, Swamprat by his wife), part of the extra expense you're paying in Busse is for his INFI steel (which you can only get from Busse) the closest performer would be CPM-3V (Very tough, with good edge holding, and good rust resistance (for a carbon steel)) 52100 (steel used by swamprat and scrapyard) will hold an edge longer, but not be as tough or rust resistant. Pricing for the same blade say a 911 style/size blade, from scrapyard you'll usually get mudder or resperiene C handles, 52100 and pay say $170, from swamprat micarta handles, 52100 and pay around $250ish and from Busse you'll get it in INFI, with either micarta or G10 and for around $400. All have great heat treat and full lifetime warranties (as long as you didn't break it on purpose/for fun, they'll replace it whether you're the original buyer or not)

For the bang for the buck, you want to look at Becker's BK-9.

As well as Ontario blades, the large are all beater blades.

Not as pretty but they will do all that you ask of them.

I still use the lower end stuff, even though I own and use the pricier stuff too.

Check out Buck Hoodlum, also Ontarios are good bang for the buck, also check out Kabar heavy bowies, 7 and 9 inchers!! I also have the Bk9, big blade, feels nice and fast in hand but still stout for hard work.

I was in the same position as you are (looking for a large fixed blade) and decided to go with a BK9. It seems JUST as indestructible as many of the MUCH more expensive, fine knives mentioned in this thread and since it can be had for well under $100.00 you won't feel bad using it for anything. This is just an opinion that I have formed in my search for a large fixed blade for brush and tree clean up, batoning, chopping, etc. Disclaimer, I will be receiving mine today from USPS and be putting it through its paces tomorrow. Good luck in your search!

I have a 711 and I'm digging it. If you're looking at a lot of brush clearing though I'd step up to the 9 incher.

I also recommend taking a look at the ESEE Junglas 10" blade and 3/16in thick, with an excellent kydex sheath and unconditional warranty, with micarta handles if you prefer that, the Junglas (including kydex sheath) can be found around the price of the 911 maybe 10-20 more.

More like $10-20 less.

thanks for all the suggestions ill have to look at them all and just pick one maybe end up with more than that
