Hey everyone,

I am looking for a larger folder in the $40-$60 range that is closer to 4"+ and a little on the hefty side. I currently EDC an Endura or BM Griptillian, but wanted something with a little more blade & handle thickness for occasional carry when warranted. I have been looking at the Kershaw JYD II and the Cold Steel Spartan to give you an idea of the ballpark I am in. Thanks!

The spartan isn't big ... its HUGE! Haha. If you are looking at the JYDII I recommend the Kershaw Lahar instead. I really like it more than my JYDII. Rather than the Spartan I recommend the Rajah III. It is still beast but not insanely big.

I have a spartan myself and it is a FUN knife.Lockup is perfect, needed some breaking in as it was hard to close at first.MASSIVE handle and a large blade with a wicked recurve.I'd recommend it anyday, although one downside may be its rust resistance but a bit of oil fixes that.

boker jim burke mini ressurection. right in that price range, good blade steel, 440c, very thick wide almost 4in blade.

I'll second Spartan. If you give the blade a satin finish, you've taken care of the rust problem. Most bead blasted blades are prone to rusting.

Well the JYD II falls a quarter inch short of your 4"+ requirement. Awesome knife, though.

If you want a 4" knife or bigger, you're probably looking at getting a Cold Steel. They're around that price range, too. Also, Spyderco has the Chinese Resilience that's coming out. It's the bigger brother to the Tenacious, and it has a 4" (or maybe 4.25" or something) blade.

Cold Steel Recon 1 for sure. Nice big strong knife. Also the kershaw cyclone is nice, if you can find one.

I will second the recomendation for a CS Rajah III, but like the Spartan it needs a good breaking-in. It's a little under the 4 inch range, but that does make it a bit easier to carry. It's also got a full-flat grind, which was a selling point for me.

4" blade is right on the border of what I consider practicle for a folder. I'd carry a fixed blade if I needed anything bigger then that.
The new Recon 1 is nice, I prefer the Rajah III over it though, just fits my hand better, and it's a flat grind opposed to the hollow found on the Recon 1. The Ti-Lite is decent as well if you want the slender blade type.
Other larger (cheap) folders I have are an HK Ascender, it's decent, kind of thin liners, but rides in the pocket nice, tip down only, but the 9cr13 steel is decent and hard with cobalt in the mix.
Even the Byrd Caracara is a decent cheap lockback that will take some punishment.

I'd have to say something from Cold Steel (Recon 1, Rajah, AK47, Voyager, etc).

Decent knives & blade steel for the price & I'm sure you can find something that's big enough for you.

You might want to wait for the spyderco resilience that comes out this month.

They are discontinued, but still findable, Kershaw Cyclone, assisted opener.

How do you give a blade a satin finish?

I used dremel and metal polish (Flitz). Polishing it was pretty easy. I used the white cotton fiber that comes with the polishing set, put some Flitz on the area that I want to polish, and start polishing. If you want to have a true satin finish, then you'll need sandpaper in different grits.

What I did was disassemble the folder, polished almost all the metal parts (especially parts that have contact with other metal parts, such as lockbar surface, blade tang, area around pivot hole), and my Spartan is as smooth as a custom now. :D
