Large Folder for around 60?

I am a Peace Officer in a semi-rural part of Oklahoma. I currently carry a CRKT M1 Lightfoot as a primary, and a cheapie Red Class Benchmade Pika as a secondary, along with my KaBar TDI weakside. The CRKT is a GREAT knife for my uses.

I have the hankering for a new primary folder, and the wife has given the nod. Due to the fact Im a broke cop, and the likelihood of loss and breakage, I like to keep purchaes in the 60 dollar region. I know this isnt a lot for a good knife, and I have several knives costing far more than this, but they dont get carried for the reasons listed. I am looking for a fairly large tactical style knife. One handed opening is a must, as is a plain edge blade.

Any idead? Ive already played with the WalMart Native, and its not as big as I want....I need help.

Well, there are a plethora of Spydercos (look at their site, take note of interesting models and shop the net for price).

Of the new Benchmades, the Griptillian can be found in that range. I'd go 154CM or stretch some for the D2 (Cabellas). Or, look around on ebay and the sale section here.

Rereading your post, I'd suggest an ebay Police (thats the low end I've seen them go for NIB) or a Grip.

Hopefully others will chime in with more than these "pat" answers.

Good Luck and Happy Choice

Kershaw seems to be on a role, but the "nice" ones are a bit higher in price.

I was just looking at the Buck 889 SBMF. I like the Strider design, and the overall beefiness of the knife. Any quality issue with this knife?

As with any liner-lock, examine the individual knife to ensure the lock is stable.

I think STR liked the Buck, though.

There are plenty of good folders for $60 or less.

The new Endura 4 is a good choice, I loved the older model and the 4 has all the improvements I could ask for. Excellent performer for around $45.

BM Griptilian 550, it's a bit over the $60 mark, but well worth it. The AXIS lock is sweet.

There are a quite a few Spydercos in the $40-60 price range that are awesome. Like the D'Allara drop point.

KaBar Mule. Big tough blade, ood steel and lock, extremely nice ergos, and the price is well under $40.

Benchmade Griptilian or Spyderco D'Allara Drop Point. Try to handle them both if you can - they both have good ergonomics, but they feel very different from each other. The biggest difference is the lock - the Spyderco is significantly harder to close, which some first responders have cited as an issue.

I too am a LEO Patrol Supervisor and a High Risk Entry Team Leader. I favor big blades and hand filling handles, and my favorite folder for patrol use is the Gerber Gator II fine edge...

BTW, if you get something with a pocket clip, take the damn thing off and carry your knife fully hidden in your back pocket.

Show me a LEO carrying his folder clipped in his pocket for all (most notably dirtbags) to see, and I'll show you a guy with some serious tactical awareness issues...

I have Grip BM551 and Spyderco Endura 3. Both of them are good knives in this price range. Grip's blade is 440C steel 3.4" long. Knife is very easy to sharpen; axis lock is fast and fun, good edge retention. This is one of my EDCs.
Endura 3 is an excellent cutter, probably better than Grip. Blade is VG10, 3.9" long. I like spyderhole too.
I do not carry this knife because do not want to scary people in my office, who was nervous when they saw Native, which is only 3" long.
You can have a good deal for Grips at gpknives $47.50.
Now Endura 4 comes out, so I got Endura 3 on e-bay for $21 new, no box.
Both are good knives, all depend on your preferences.

I see them all the time. If the gun doesn't deter said dirtbag why would a knife? How often would you use a knife for SD anyway? ANd I hope you enjoy digging in your pockets when I have my clipped on knife out and ready already.

The D`allara drop point is the CLEAR choice. Please check it out, amazing knife for 55 dollars. From Spyderco.

Great knife, but it has a huge profile in the closed position. You need to make sure it fits your carry options.

I'm in Oklahoma also. If you are near Bartlesville come by for a visit. You'll get the opportunity to handle many nice folders that way. I have several that come to mind that I happen to know other officers carry.

The first one that came to mind was the Spyderco Endura. You can get this for less than you want to spend and it comes in combo edge, fully serrated, or plain edge versions.

For that matter the Byrd line of Spydercos knives is quite impressive. I have a Stainless Cara Cara that is absolutely flawless. I was given this knife but I know it can be bought for a mere $20 at places and to handle it you would not even begin to think it was sold at the correct price. Its that good. Made in China though.

If the opening hole is not your cup of tea you can also look into one other knife that I said I'd not support anymore. But the truth is for the money it is a lot of knife and certainly much more than a hunting knife. The Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter. You can get it at Newgraham.com for just over $50.

I happen to have several of the Buck/Strider knives and I like them all. These are over built high quality folders. I have been swaying away from liner locks more and more over time but I trust these. They are a good well built knife that have blades and liners much thicker than anything else I've seen in production knives. If you can make it by I'll show you what I mean.

You might also consider one of my modified Spyderco Rescue 93mm knives with the reprofiled blade and Wave feature added for quick deployment. I have several other officer friends using these on duty and they seem quite popular.

Contact me anytime through my profile and I'll be happy to work something out with you.

I too would suggest the Spyderco Endura, as well as the D'Allara 2. Yes, it is a big knife, BUT it can be open AND closed one handed!!!

Yes and the Endura or the Rescue, or Atlantic Salt even are very light weight and thin. So they can be conveniently carried without feeling the bulk of them in your pocket.
