Large Folder for around 60?

Camillus Heat assisted opener with 3.65 inch AUS 8 blade. $50 at most on-line knife sources.

I think an Atlantic or Pacific Salt from Spyderco might fit the bill. Both are large and useful. The Atlantic has a sheepsfoot blade and the Pacific is a little pointier. Both are low-weight/ridiculuously low-maintainence and fairly large.

Another option might be the Vaquero series of knives from Cold Steel. They cut a lot, but they don't cost a lot.

Going to jump on the Spyderco Bandwagon and say the Endura 4. Lightweight, good ergonomics, good steel, choice in edges (PE, SE, or Combo), Movable Pocket Clip for Tip-up or Tip-down carry, and 1 hand opening. All for under 60$. Also if it's lost or broken it's easily replaced through numerous dealers.

I have recieved a lot of positive feedback on the Atlantic Salt and the Blue 93mm Rescue mods when I do the Wharncliff reprofile on the blades. They look and feel much more balanced this way too, but it gives that blunt tip a point that can now move the knife into something that could also be used in self defense. I just personally like Wharncliff blades a lot and am somewhat biased though.

I like these after the mods better than the Pacific Salt because the handle on the Atlantic and the Rescue are so much better. It would be nice to have that Pacific blade on the Atlantic or Rescue handle though.

Here in these pics you can see what it looked like before by checking out the Atlantic. Both the Atlantic and the Rescue are basically the same knife aside from the blade steel difference. I do like the plain edge part of the Rescue though. It is amazing to me what just a subtle change in the shape of the blade can do for the appeal of this knife.

Thank you very much for the help. I am still in the market, and the Salts look like the knife I am after. I will be buying one of these quite soon. I like the looks of the reprofiled Atlantic a lot.

However, I just came into a Blade Tech Wegner, the cheapie witht he 440c Steel. Not the best steel, but a very nice knife. I got it for a steal, so I had to pick it up.

I also want a Buck Strider. Looks like I have my next two knife purchases lined up.

BTW, Im in deep southern OK, or I would come by. I also carry my knives clipped to my pocket. Two of them. One weak side front, one strong side rear. I feel that it is MUCH more tactically unsound to be digging for a knife in a pocket than to have it visibly clipped to it for easy access. I have a friggin gun on my belt, doubt the knife is gonna be an issue. Its not a primary weapon, its a tool.

Well I am in the northern part so that won't work. Nevertheless, its nice to meet another Okie.

If you get a Atlantic and want the blade reprofiled just get in touch with me and I'll fix you up N/C since you are a public servant involved protecting and serving. I've been doing the same deal for guys going over to Iraq or EMTs. Just send enough to cover mailing it back to you when I'm done.

Thank you. I now have a reason to buy one. It will be my next knife purchase. I might even make a trip up that way for the hell of it. I have some friends In Owasso I need to go see anyway.

CRKT M21...that thing is pretty damn big! I was also impressed with the construction and quality. Great knife, and can be found for under $60. The heavy recurve blade really flies open with the flipper.

I just took possession of my BladTech Wegner Professional Hunter Lite. It is exactly the knife I had been looking for, and I paid less than 40 dollars for it. I will attempt to post my first review in a little while.

I know you said 60 bucks... But you might want to look at the Swamp Rat Knife Works, Rat Trap folder.

It's a large very light weight folder that is rock solid, plain blade, S30V steel, G10 grips. But,,, It hits about $140 shipped.... Lifetime warranty

Oilman, I gather you aren't a LEO, as (no offense here) your response shows you don't understand the tactical aspects & thinking of which I speak...

PM me if you ever want to sell your Benchmade Pika with 440C blade and great handle. I think it is a winner and a steal in it's price range.

I would go with the endura too. Hard to beat for the price and some good improvments recently. -Also, I ownd a buck/stider and had the lock fail. In all fairness, I was throwing the knife into wood at the time, but I feel it still shoulda held. Sold it.

No offense taken, but you can be as tactical as you want and still have your knife in a bad position. And then tell other people they aren't "Tactical" because they want to be able to access their knife quickly. And by the way... you aren't a (cop, soldier, firefighter...) so you don't know anything works better on other forums. We don't discriminate by day jobs here. If that's not the case then maybe you could explain how hiding your knife when you carry a gun helps you keep bad guys at bay. Or, are they so shocked after they somehow get your gun and you pull a knife after digging for it under your belt (actually all the stuff hanging off of your belt) and in your pocket that they give up? No disrespect but it doesn't make a lot of sense. But then again I'm not a (cop, soldier, firefighter...) so I wouldn't know.:(

So is that what you just bought?

If not, get yourself a Benchmade 551 or 550 Griptilian. Both 440C and 154CM blade steel are great steels and you'll most likely love the knife.

The blade on these are about 3.45". I have both the 550 and 551 and I don't think you can get a better knife for the money.

On top of everything there is nothing to not like about the Axis lock.

I wouldn't be surprised if that (terminator) guy wasn't a cop at all. He certainly doesnt come off as being knowledgeable- not that being a LEO makes you knowledgeable (but in some minds it does) Fact is, the knife should be clipped to your pocket or somewhere- for fast access, or a fixed blade in a kydex sheath.
That is the entire point of having a "tactical knife"- so you can deploy it quickly in an emergency. Such as rescue, or self defense, or cutting a sandwich.

It is NOT tactical to fumble around in a pocket for your cutter when every second counts.

Another fact: I am not a LEO, but I know more about knives and knife laws than any LEO I have ever met. These guys on the average, are as sophisticated about their knives as the average construction worker. Which is to say- not very.
So when a self proclaimed LEO tells me I am more tactical with a slow deploying knife- I can recognize it as BS.

Nice choice, good deal!
Those look pretty sweet, and are high quality.

I might be inclined to go along with fudo on this one ... especially since you can get the Alaskan Guide Series 110 Folder Knife from Cabellas (S30V steel) for $65
