I'm looking for a hiking knife. I would like to have a large folding knife (blade at least 4 1/2 inches) that is of good quality. Please give any suggestions.

While its' blade is only 3.93 inches, the Benchmade 805 TSEK would be a great choice as a "hiking knife", and is a solid folder that I wouldn't exactly call "small", with an opened length of 9.36 inches.:).

YES! *high-fives glockman* (has an 806D2)

Spyderco Military is my recommendation for your criteria, though its only a little over 4".

To be honest though for hiking and camping you can't beat a SAK and a fixed blade.

Benchmade Blackwood 630. Framelock, S30V, recurve. what else would you want?

If you are looking only for a folder, I second the Benchmade 630 recommendation. It's a beefy blade (for a folder) and framelocks are a nice 'n simple design to maintain in the field.
However, I think a 6"+, carbon steel, fixed blade, along with a smaller knife, is the ideal field set-up. :)

Sog Pentagon Elite II. 5 inch blade, grippy handle and a small area of serrations on the blade for those tough cutting jobs.

Why settle for a smaller knife when you can get a great one that's the size you want? Go for the Camillus CUDA Maxx Bowie (5-1/2" blade). It's one of the best knives available at any size.

there's one going for a good price in the for sale forums...that cuda maxx bowie...

actually, for field use - nothing beats a fixed blade for ease of use, clean-up and strength

Doug, I was looking for a folder for hiking a few years ago. I try several ones and now I'm looking for a small fixed blade!

Trust me, go straight to the fixed blade. Is the better way to go to the outdoors.

By the way, I'm very new here to say it, but welcome to the forums!

Sorry for my english :o

My largest folder is a Benchmade 806D2. Over 4" I start looking for fixed blades because I tend to use a knife that large as I would a strong fixed blade.

Spyderco offers two excellent knives that would be suitable:
- The Military folder, or;
- The fixed-blade Temperance.

Both are light-weight knives with great ergonomics and practical blade-size.

What else could I want? Something that doesn't infringe other maker's copyrights.

The upcoming Spyderco Bison? 5" folder - recurve blade - front lock (MBC strength IIRC)

As was discussed in another thread, a copyright is only valid if it is NON-functional. The patent on the Spydie-hole ran out so they tried to copyright the hole. Unfortunately, the hole is functional so it isn't covered by copyright law. AFAIK, IIRC, IMO, yada yada yada

Spyderco obtained our trademark legally and fairly. The issue of "function" was very carefully addressed and studied by the PTO. The PTO decided that our trademark was legal and fair.
