I have read some places that the Griptillian knife from Benchmade feels cheap. I have also thought that once or twice..

So i pulled my large 550 mel pardue design Griptillian (154CM) out of its Cryogenic state to see what it can do.

**Personal Protective Equipment equipped** for all active tests!

UPDATE IN POST #4 #6 #15

New condition and very sharp at this stage of testing(factory edge)

Batoning (for this hard woods were used)

easy. No lock failure

Bit bigger.

It did it but the lock failed once.

THIS ONE NEXT ,YEA?......Nope (ill set this one aside for when i get around to trying to baton with my sebenza...)

This one is better.

all the wood that was split

**SUMMARY OF BATONING**
Did what i asked it to but the lock failed one time. knife lock up solid still.

Next!
Puncturing through a metal baking pan.

no tip damage

Next!

Oh look.. a 2002 players cigarette tin.

EH YO CIGARETTE TIN COLLECTORS..batoned it in to biiiitttssssssssssssss.

I tried to pry a nail I hammered in to a chuck of wood using the opening hole..no go . Also tried to pry the nail out with the blade(could see it would of broke so i halted)

Conclusion/results

The knife is considerably less sharp(will still cut paper) and has some small dings on the edge. Fixable things even with my skill level of sharpening.
The pivot seems to be a bit staugee with gunk from all of this still opens well and closes well.Locks up excellent with no *UP* or *Down* play

This knife may feel cheap.. but from the small tests I put it through this knife strikes me as quality. How well it held up with me batoning with it surprised me. Other knives from other company's at different price points could probably preform the same as this Benchmade large graiptillian.

I saw this written else wear and I feel I can write it hear ..colour me impressed. For non out of the ordinary and even out of the ordinary tasks this knife or another large Griptilian would be excellent for an EDC

(in the end these tests don't matter really, you will either like it or not once you get it in hand)

I now have my self a nice sharpening project!!

Although this goes against most everything we stand for. GREAT JOB! :)
I agree, the Grip will take a beating and come back for more. When it comes to doing ridiculous things with a folder, always best to have it be a cheap axis lock or Tri Ad. They are fun and take a beating.
Keep going, I want to see what else the lock can take,
I know that a blade can break at any time. But I want more thrashing. Can you make a video. I wont search the tube, but I will watch if you keep going. LOL.
Thanks for the fun pics.
Matt

I LOVE abuse threads almost as much as I love scarred knives! Well done!

For future testing: I was told by a few people that if you're batonning a folder, don't engage the lock. Batonning puts all kinds of horrible stresses in the wrong direction.

working with some fire wood this is what was on top of the pile.

NO NO NO, SHOULD NOT BURN!

what do i do, what do i do.....

AH! digging time.

Got this far and the tip broke..BUN DAT

continued. progress shot.

Almost.

Gotcha!

After math

Remedy (#800 Japanese stone and a sharpmaker.)

and..........................

ok what was i doing?........
......

uh...
...

Oh yea! wood for the fire

Cleaned up the knife..

VICTORY KIWI!!!!!

*Knife is sharp at the beginning of this test*

Further study of the Bechmade 550 griptilian.
Tactical use.

Armour penetration

A Friend.(nice to see one of these out and about)

....moving on to the testing material.

Not land dwelling armour.. no ....

Sea creature armour.......

First and formost , pour some out.

Hacking at the shell.

Progress

Hacking strikes are used as a stab would most likely glance off.

exposed.

more exposure looking inside the vitals would not be in this area.

Probably in this area.

The knife is having a hard time breaking the armour.

Felld

Result.

extensive edge damage and blunting. Very fixable 154 cm seems to sharpen easily.(I like how it sharpens up.)

It preformed but the time it took me to penetrate the armour it may have been to late, This creature could of got the better of me.. . .. ... ........

Armour could be made out of sea shells and other hard objects from aquatic life. Constructed and designed with quality in mind it could prove to be useful.

The shell was returned to the depths of the Water.

The CaCO3 structure in mollusks is legitimately strong stuff. That's one of the more brutal tests you can put in front of a steel blade!

Dude if you end up completely destroying the grip in the process of this thread, I'm totally willing to send you a bit to offset the cost or replacement.

This thread is fantastic!

I'm waiting for a bank vault to show up and you to be like, "Alrighty, lemme finish my coffee and we're gonna stab through this sucker!"

Great thread, great no-holds-barred use of the knife!

I loved my 550HG. One of the best cutting tactical folders I've seen. The edge was quite thin and sharpened quickly. However I did something I shouldn't have and it is no more.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introductory statement:
Sharpening the edge so far.. major work done on the stone, finishing work done on BOTH pre-sets of a stock equiped Sharpmaker. I cant say that I have been exercising proper technique sharpening but so far the knife has finished up sharp and able to cut newspaper style paper.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Further Study.

lets say the need arises for a projectile to hit a floating Balloon with something valuable attached to it.

A-HA!

and

one baton later

(the thin body of the marker succumbed easily.)

A PROJECTILE!! (the ball is beautiful looking in this state.)

cleaned up.

I tried to make it in to a DumDum/but its solid metal and would DONE the edge

(it also would be impossible to know if the marked surface would be the area that would strike the balloon)

In the right circumstances this knife can provide.

Moving on..

I wont write what was done but the knife took heavy damage.
the biggest dip you see along the edge is a nasty chip.

not good..

moving further along..

the knife was tactically tossed in to an active part of the fire.

i then proceeded to count out loud ( read it out loud as well if you would like)

One Benchmade
Two Benchmade
Three Benchmade
Four Benchmade
Five benchmade
Six Benchmade
Seven Benchmade

(you can stop reading out loud..if you would like)

The knife was quickly and carfully extracted after the count of SEVEN Benchmade.

The affected area.

thus far

Conclusion.

a Nasty Chip in the area of the edge

With the Exposure to fire the area doesn't seem that bad.. in theory , the knife, if dropped in to a fire, if possible to extract, could be extracted within the count of Seven Benchmade. Without it being ruined.

Note: if the pivot area is exposed to fire it may unfavorably affect the shapes and components in that area. Many Many variables to this.

Awesome thread! I love my grip and it's in my pocket every day (I'm not a rotation guy but do change to a couple other knives when dressed-up).

I too have pushed my full size grip--although not nearly as far as you have because I haven't used her on steel or shells and never fire...

Amazing for a folder.
Usually a baton and folders part ways at the shaft pin if left in an open position. The blade will shear the pin.
Not if but when it will happen , what it will do to the knife, and or user.

Interesting fire test. Have more respect for my Grip after seeing how much abuse it can take.
