Bob, and I, already had some discussions with Sal about this. Sal really likes my version of the 4" with the Green G-10 handles. ;)

Allright then, we might as well get this started.

Setting aside discussion of the ZDP sprint run, which is a separate subject. What do you guys think of the idea of the large model Lum Chinese folder with the 4" blade, and green G10 scales?

Here's tonyccw's custom sample:

This is very different from asking for a sprint run, this would be a new model. A bigger investment for Spyderco, and a much longer wait.

So let's hear the voices, what do you guys think?

This new model discussion. Nothing is off the table, nothing is promised. Have fun.

Since we're talking about totally new tooling, can we start off with a different lock than the old liner lock?

While I'm not a fan of that particular knife, or liner locks in general, the idea sounds perfect. I can see how a G-10 version of the Lum would be very highly desired, and while a 4" blade will be illegal for some to carry, I think the knife itself would look better with a longer blade. That was one of the few things that turned me off about the Lum Chinese, it just looked too small.

Just my thoughts, this should prove to be a popular thread, the Lum Chinese is a cult classic;)

What would you want to see on a production version?

Since I already have a 3.75" lefty like that on order from Bob Lum, how about a LH liner lock, stainless damascus blade, front bolsters and wood or bone scales.

Looks like a good idea to me. I am not sure if the lock can be changed without changing the design but it might be worth a try for those who won't buy liner locks. I would buy one as it is now as well though as I really like the Lum designs.

I like the idea of a larger blade. I wonder if it could be changed to a back lock without ruining the lines?

There was once a Blackie Collins knife (I can't remember if Gerber or Case made it) with a lockback not visible from the side. The handles were thick enough that the lock cutout was actually a crater that went into the spine of the handle to press the lock release. From the side you couldn't see it.

Noooo, go smaller.

G10 is OK, but I really liked the cnavas micarta on the new classic sebenzas.

Also I agree that it needs a different lock.

Does this mean we are not getting the small Lum chinese folder from the other thread??I like this too but I would rather have the original smaller sized one.

Nah, I think it is too close in shape to the Mannix and that knife is hell for stout. I am talking blade shape here and not handle shape. keepem sharp

Separate subject. There has been no official word released on the status of that proposal.

Sounds good to me, but what about green grippy carbon fiber?? Put me down for 1 no matter what. Color, scale, lock, no lock, blade steel can be stone, I don't care. Any other Chinese Folder that Spyderco makes, I want it!! :)
Unless it cost as much as a custom, then never mind, I'll just order from Mr. Lum, so try to keep it under $250.00MSRP.

Blades

While I would love to see a remake with G-10 and a compression or ball lock, a 4" blade kinda kills it for me.

I would love a 4" version of the original.

However, I'd like to see a frame lock instead of the original liner lock.

A lock back would be my ultimate choice, but I just can't see it working with the sweeping lines of the original design.

Just my 0.02

Any new handle material would be great-I'd prefer micarta, but I'd love
Greeen G-10. I am with the above on a new lock. Hell, I'd even like it as a slipjoint, but would like any lock besides a linerlock,.

YES!!!! yes!!!!
That would be awesome. Personally, I'd like to see some of the day-glo green G10.
