Large Native?

My Kingdom for a SEARCH CAPABILITY!!!! (but you leave my Spydies alone!)
wink.gif

Anyway, I've missed the posts detailing the reason(s) why the Search capability was removed, if there were any. Can anyone remember? Spark?

I think there was strong interest expressed at the Blade show and in this forum for the large native (Chief). I was left with a strong sense that this would be one of Spyderco's (Sal's) millenium knives -- i.e. coming out sometime in 2000. At least so I hope...

No plans at tat this time. Too much going on right now. We'll show it at the New York Show for more input.

I'll see you at the NYC show- Will there be any "early releases" for sale to those who want to "test drive" them? That would be a SUPER knife!
Holding my breath.

Rugger - Sorry, at this time, there is only the one pc.

Although we're planning to have some of the newer models at New York. Probably not a great amount though.

A Large Native?

Whats the deal with this? I would be all over a large Native!

Is there a Prototype scan?

I mean, if I went around saying I was an Emperor because some
moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, people would put me away!

swball - THANK YOU!

Okay - the GOTTA HAVE FACTOR is WAY UP THERE!

I was wondering is Spyderco would make a SIFU or Vaquaro sized blade - I want a KING SIZED Spyderco now...
Light weight & with a CLIP!

Ogre - At this time, we have no plans to make any folders over 4" in blade length. They are illegal to carry just about everywhere so the only "Politically correct" function is collection.

We are planning some LEO & Martial Bladecraft Specific stuff, but our research indicates that LEO's (from the White House security to the Cop on the beat) really don't want carry folders over 4". From there they go fixed.

So if we do ever produce any "Exciting looking but probably won't be carried" folders", it will be for collectors.

Currently, I do not believe that there are enough collectors that could or would support the cost of a production run. We can always do a "Prototype" run of 20 or 30 pieces, but these would have to go for high "Custom" prices.

Pant!!Pant!! Drool!!Drool!!

When is this large Native coming out Sal?!

I need to know when I should break out the camping gear so I can set up camp on my knife-dealer's doorstep?

This is a MUST have folder!
May need two of these...

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid.

Sal, grudgingly, I agree with you. Most people shy away from large folders.
I have 2 Natives right now... The plain edge Native is shockingly sharp. When I did the "shave test" it actually shaved of the top layer of skin as well as severing all the hairs. No deep cut - just a very thin onion skin kinda peel... NEVER has any other knife done that!
From now one - I think I am buy only Spyderco knives. No Spider - No sale.

If I cant have a Large Native - there is the Starmate... or the Lum Tanto number... or... or...

You do good stuff over there in Golden Colorado

One last question:
What about a Liner Lock Native?

Just bringin' this one back to the top.

Hey Sal!
When am I gonna see these at my knife guy's store?

The blade does not have to be over 4".
3 7/8" will do nicely.

"At this time, we have no plans to make any folders over 4" in blade length. They are illegal to carry just about everywhere so the only 'Politically correct' function is collection."

I see the argument that over 4" is illegal a lot, but I'm curious if someone could provide a list of states where this is true. It's not true here in MA, it's not true in CA, and to my understanding in NJ and NY they go by palm width, which is closer to 3.5" - so many existing Spydies are already illegal. I'm not claiming the 4" limit is a myth, just curious if it's as widespread as we've come to believe. Blade listed all the state knife carry laws a few years back and I don't recall seeing it that often.

Even if the 4" limit is exaggerated, taht doesn't mean Spyderco should produce a mega-folder, of course. Spyderco makes tools, not weapons (notable limited and unadvertised exceptions), and it's hard for me to see a folder over 4" as a tool. If I need that length I'm definitely in a job and an environment that allows fixed-blades.

Also, at sizes over 5" pocket clips get silly and opening holes get somewhat redundant... but why am I playing devils's advoacate? I want one!

Ogre - We probably wouldn't do a Linerlock Native. If we experiment with other locks for the Native, they would be one of the new locks like the Rolling Lock.

Drew - I agree that it would be a nice "collector" piece. If and when the number of Spyderco collectors is large enough to make a short run something other than a loss, I'm all for it. Fun stuff, let's play. Carbon fiber Rolling Lock 5" Civilians, etc.

However, at this time, the costs of tooling up and making a short run really likes 1,200 pieces.

Interesting subject though.

Ti handled integral lock Rescue in 440v, if you would be so kind.
