Hey guys,

trying my first set of scales, but I need a 2" x 6" block --- preferrable of wood (blackwood if possible.)

Is stabilized wood essential on a user (chopper)?

Does anyone have any links to some good sources? I've been searching but only finding 1.5" blocks...

Thanks!

Woodcraft has Blackwood in many sizes. It does not need stabilizing.
I have blackwood and many other stabilized woods on hand. Send me and email or Pm.

Just asking...so you don't have to tell me if you don't want; why the need for 2" diameter? I just couldn't see the need if you're only trying to get one knife out of it. Just curious :-)

Ray,

I just measured the tang, length is almost 6" and height is about 1 7/8"... Does that seem unreasonably large?

I didn't say before, but this is a mod job of a factory knife, not a true make for me. It's a huge full tang chopper, with a pretty good hump along the top and the original scales cover a decent bit of the guard. I suppose I could try to redesign the guard area to save some scale material...

The length is fine for a big chopper, but man that is a gigantic handle at almost 2" in diameter. I just went out and checked in my garage and the only thing with a handle that close in diameter was my pickaxe and I'm swinging that with two hands. Maybe it's just me but I think that's way too large for a even a big chopper and I wear XL gloves myself. Of course it's not sitting in front of me so you'll have to use your own judgment, but if I were you I'd make a handle with those dimensions out of a cheap wood and check it first to see if you like the grip. Perhaps it's contoured and I just can't picture it. Just want to make sure you're gonna like it before you put the time in :)

I don't think he wants 2" diameter, I think he wants 2" wide by 6" long, which is the size I would like to get my material in...

Now that I think about it I have had instances where I needed something almost 2" wide so that I could fit the curve of the certain handles and I might have misunderstood in thinking the diameter of the handle would be almost 2". If so I stand corrected...;)

That's exactly right Ray, sorry for the confusing terminology

I only need each scale to be about 3/8" wide, but 2" tall, 6"long...

Eli, I checked the cabinets and have a nice piece of 2X2 Blackwood, 18" long. It is REAL black. If you actually need scales, not a 2" block, I'll cut them to your thickness. Send me a PM.

sorry for hijacking the thread but is hardwood flooring stabilized as in can you use it for knife handles?
