To start, I always feel a little conflicted about fixed blade talk on the traditional forum and apologize if I aggravate a grumpy moderator in advance! :p

I have been looking for a fairly specific fixed blade recently for EDC. I want something on the large and substantial end of back pocket carriable knives, ~7 1/2-9". Not too picky on the steel but I would like something in between pry-bar thickness and my supple GEC h20 blade thickness. Thin hollow ground of FFG is a must. Clip/drop/sheepsfoot for blade shape. For aesthetics, I like the full tang with micarta/natural materials scale look.

It looks like the CRK Nyala fits the bill and for about $150 less the Hess large caper is very appealing. The Landi kinzua is a nice sub $100 option in this category as well....Or maybe the GEC H23 at 8 5/8" however, the sheath...I would have to cut off the top cover clasp thingy for backpocket carry...

Anyway, I would appreciate either feedback on the knives im looking at (particularly the hess and landi) or recommendations of competitive options.

As long as they are traditional patterns, grumpy old man moderator is cool with the discussion.

Get a puukko. Traditional as it gets, pocketable, and if you buy a good one they are the sharpest knives on the planet.

I have seen many fixed blades in the knifemaker's sales section that fit your requirements and look great.
I recently got a knife from GL Drew and I love it. I've seen some by JK knives, DW Childress, and other makers as well, that might be good for you.
That's where I would look :)

I'll echo what Fausto said.
There are many great fixed blades that appear on the knife makers section that may fit your requirements and the individuals are a pleasure to deal with.
Did I mention for a hand made knife these are incredible purchases for the price! Plus you are supporting a self employed hard working knife enthusiast as well. :D

This is around 8": might not fit your requirements but it's quite an example of what you can find in the maker's sales ;)

I've got a d w childress neck knife. I like it but the stock is a tad thick and I'm not the biggest fan of the sheath...I might have to try pukko, I've never owned a scandi ground blade. I'm also going to try to make my own pouch sheath so that's not so important anymore.

Andi's jagdnicker?

;)

This was first thought as well. I really love that great german pattern. They are available in several sizes and from several makers. But 90% of them are having stag handles.
For the high quality ones is one construction mark; they are made in half-integral construction. This means a high stability for many kinds of purposes.

Here is my small one...

... and the top side - half integral construction visible.

I use to carry them in one of my cargo pants (the leg pockets - there is a long, slim pocket for a ruler)

But the scandinavian knives are great to look after as well.

Here is one of mine... I got from our fellow forum member Thom (aka scruffuk)

Matt Bailey offers many pocket friendly patterns that have the added benefit of being forged blades as well.

I'm pretty sure boker makes an integral jagdnicker in their German made line up but it will cost you a pretty penny...I like the aesthetics of it though... man that pukko though, and I think the pukko is the least threatening looking since in Ohio it's technically illegal to conceal carry a weapon and whether or not it's a weapon comes down to intent and aesthetics unfortunately.

A couple of months ago my son and I went to GW Drews house he only lives about a half a hour from me. I bought my son a skinner from him. My son is 40 and an avid hunter. He has used this knife on two white tails so far this season and he loves it. I also would recommend a handmade knife. I have only had experience with Gerry however there are several excellent makers on this forum and any of them would be an excellent choice and I think in the long run you would be happier with a custom.

I started looking into them. Looks like Kellam makes an attractively priced one that has lots of good reviews, I think I will pick one up after a little more research to confirm their quality.

So the medium sized one? You'll have to let me know what you think! They have a very attractive price tag :)

Yes sir.

The small one is too small, and the big one might be a tad bigger than I want for EDC purposes.

I have a Bark River Mini Canadian that is about the right size, but I would like for it to be just a little pointier.

I don't know any knives to recommend, but I do carry straight knives in my pockets. My experience is that 8" is a lot of knife for any pocket, much less a back pocket. My sweet spot is 6-7". In addition, pocket carry generally requires a slim profile, that means thin stock and handle slabs that are thin and flat. Also back pocket carry requires a slim butt :) You may want to make sure you can try out the blade first and not buy sight unseen over the internet.
