Large Sebenza OR Strider SMF...

Either is a solid choice and you really do need to try both if you're a knife nut IMHO... I had an old Lrg Seb 21 that I traded, my old SMF is gone as well.

I'm down to two SNG's and really need to get another SMF back in rotation.

My current fav SNG:

Love the "wave" mod. Nice work!

Just because you said you liked that. I thought I would get waaay off topic here and post this if the mods will allow. But, I found the below Strider SMF available on Ebay with the Wave Modification and it was done by BladeForum's own "celebrity knife maker" Charlie Mike.

Should be stated that is NOT being sold by Charlie Mike.

Check it out:

LOL, I did a giveaway on that knife on the Devil's forum... as a way of giving the finger to Strider Knives.

Dude, what are the odds of me finding that thing?! See on the picture, that they referenced you as a recognized knife maker.

So awesome that I came across it!!

Charlie Mike, when did you mod that SMF?

Around August/September of last year.

Bought both.

The SnG was a joke: Bad ergos, bad cutting geometry, subpar fitnfinish, dull edge, lazy packaging, overpriced, very disappointing

The Large Sebenza was a game-changer: Comfortable ergos, great blade profile, unparalleled fitnfinish, razor edge, well packaged, became the knife by which all knives I buy are compared to.

To me, it's literally a mediocre, overbuilt, near useless knife being compared to a timeless classic that will inspire for generations. A Montblanc 149 compared to a Schrade Tactical Fountain Pen.

I have had the opposite experience in edges from the factory. The SnG came sharp the Sebenza came dull. I am sure that both companies turn out many more sharp knives than dull. Any knife company has its hiccups every once in awhile. While I wont try and argue that Striders are the equal of CRK in fit and finish (not many knives are) I will say that the 5 Striders (three folders and two fixed) that I have personally owned have been great. Again, everyone turns out a bad product eventually.

I have had both I will say I have a bias against thick edges so the SMF was not my thing, its a well built knife the ergo's were good it carried really well and was tough as crap just didn't cut well. The CRK is great too more of a cutter in my experience even the 25 with a thicker blade slices better than the ffg SMF. Having said all of that I sold both and find my Ferox to be the best of both worlds. I guess my advice would be get both and try them they hold value quite well so you can probably sell the one you like less or just keep them (I know it's a lot of $$$). If your fortunate enough to live near a store go in and try them out for yourself would probably be the perfect option.

The SMF is enormous compared to a Large Sebenza. I'd say that unless you are someone who likes the large ZTs (0200, 0300, etc.) that the SMF would be too big. A better comparison would be the SnG. Sebenza is 4.7 ounces, SMF 5.8, SnG 4.3. The blade length will be close between the Sebenza and the SnG but of course the SnG has less cutting edge due to the choil.

Sebenza: Cool because of the simplicity. I've owned 3 CRKs all purchased new. One of them was shaving sharp out of the box the other two were downright dull. They don't hold an edge very long either but they do sharpen up nice. They look better and better the more you carry and use them.

Strider: I'v owned a few and still have an SMF and a couple SnGs. I had a PT for a minute but returned it because it was just too small. All my striders came sharp. A couple of them started out with a sticky lock but they eventually broke in. No off center blades or other issues. I had to return an SnG to Strider because the lock bar stop fell out and was lost. They fixed it with no issues or drama.

I'm more of a Strider guy, they just appeal to me more. The Sebenza is a must have but I don't carry it much unless I'm dressing up for something (which isn't often). Not to muddy up the waters even more but as someone who prefers more Striderish knives I've been carrying an Umnumzaan for the last while. Maybe a better comparison still would be Umnumzaan vs SnG.

Not a personal attack on anyone, but I find it very peculiar that so many people consider a knife with a coarse sand blasted finish, two heavy titanium scales, a stone washed blade, and no embellishments save for a lanyard pin, backspacer, and thumb stud that may or may not be anodized a "dressy knife" or "gentleman's folder".

I give Strider the 'finger' constantly buy buying and enjoying as many of their great knives as I can.

Just different way's to give someone the 'finger' I guess......

Ha ha.. I just bought and had to pay for an awesome Mick Strider Custom SMF. Had to give a lot more than a finger. Cost me a kidney to buy that thing! :)

But oh so worth it...

Well said.

I really like both knives. I currently rotate between my large plain Seb 21 and a PD1 SNG. The SNG wins in the grip and asthetics area. Just looks better and fits my hand like a glove. The choil allows for a superior grip on these knives. And the PD1....hell even the cpm154 is badass. All of the striders I have owned have stayed sharp so long it's crazy!!

Now the Seb must have as Alex says(nicotine in the Ti slabs). Haha. It doesn't hold an edge well, not the greatest cutter, but there's just something about it that I can't explain. I really do like it. The grips not that much better than anything else I have, but again there's something I cannot explain.

I think at some point you will end up with both.

Gizler, I am loving your phone's spell check. But man, I don't think anyone can disagree with a single word you said.

Chili, nicotine and all.. You are right on the money!
