Large Stockmans

I bought the #82 Dixie for the exact same reasons as you stated and I couldn't be happier.
It carries very well, is really comfortable unlike some of the Stockmen with the protruding sheepsfoot blade and has pretty thin blades.
A regular Stockman usually is a bit too beefy for me, so the Dixie is just about perfect.

And here's a picture for you to look at until it arrives :).

I strongly agree with Sturzi, I favour the Dixie over all other Large Stockman knives due to the fact it does not give that awkward handful of blades feel in the hand which other Large Stockman do with high riding blades. I can carry it in the trouser pocket whereas CASE versions are heavier more obtrusive and get put in the coat pocket. They are fine knives though. I prefer the blade arrangement on the Dixie as well as I need no gelding blade...

I think the OP will not be disappointed, he may like to look into Böker Germany carbon Stockmans at a later date, decent knives for sure.

Here's my Blackwood Northfield Dixie, sleek...

Here's an 81. 4 inches is as large as I like. I have always preferred a 3 5/8 size but now I have come to prefer the larger knife. The main blade is considerably larger and more useful.

Will, that Northfield is a beauty!

Thanks Steve, most kind! I'm really delighted with it and this is unusual as I'm not so much a fan of big patterns.

The Osage Orange on your Abilene looks fantastic, it's some nice stuff!

Will

Sleek is right - beautiful is right too - very nice Stockman! OH

I just pulled out my early 1960's Delrin handled 5853 Boker USA Stockman - I had it in my mind it was a Large Stockman, but it's a Premium Stockman at 4". It just has a bigger "look" than my other Premium Stockman pattern knives, probably because the blades sit lower in the frame than my Buck or Case Large Stockman knives do. OH

Thanks Will. We need to start an Osage orange thread. Nice old Boker there OH. Nothing like a mint old knife.

The Stockman is one of my favorite patterns. There seems to be a blade suited to every job. I use the sheep for boxes and general use, the clip for big jobs, and the spey gets special "restaurant duty". My 4 year old daughter usually needs her drink straw trimmed as to not turn over her cup when we go out to eat. The little blade doesn't scare people so much;)

I usually gravity toward the medium size, but I won a vintage full size 8 OT from Cory a few months back, and I never go to the job site without it. It's a little over built, but rock solid and reliable. I never feel under knifed with a larger stockman.

Posted my Schrade and Frontier's before so here's my Boker Classic from the early 80's.

Another of my favorite really large stockman are the Moore Maker #5304 @ 4⅜" closed, this one in burnt white bone and 1095.

This picture compares the jumbo Moore Maker to a 4" Kabar, showing just how big the MM really is!

Glad to hear it's getting some use. I just ran across some pictures of it last night and was hoping it's not stuck in another drawer gathering rust again.

So the mailman was kind to me today and a tube made its way to my front door.

Very happy with it. It must be that the knives I normally carry have half-stops because the lack of them on this knife threw me off for a minute. It isn't a problem just an adjustment. I really like the size and the blade shapes. Sharpness was just OK but that has already been remedied. Mine has a nice easy pull and consistent on all three blades. I'm going to drop it in the pocket and carry it for a few weeks and see how we get along.

I also like the tang stamps on this model. Very classy.

Great shot Greg, I too like that script tang stamp, a nice addition.

I favour the non half stop, makes the action so smooth. My Dixie has moderate pull but tremendous snap:D:eek::D A fine combination.
