Hi All,

I went ahead and got my first quality knife, the SOG Seal Pup Elite, and I'm definitely satisfied. It should serve as a nice general purpose knife, and is light and small enough for a survival kit.

BUT, I'm wondering about some of the larger knives out there. The 7-9 inchers that will survive any punishment you give them. I figure for longer trips that would be helpful and be worth it.

I really don't know much about brand, make, etc... but I figured you guys must have some favorites.

Thanks!

14" tramontina machete, $6.95, not much for prying but I don't remember ever needing to pry in the woods. If I did, I would probably cut a stick to pry with. Chris

The Becker Brute is good. The original Gerber LMF/BMF's are better. The Cold Steel UWK. The Cold Steel Bushman. Ka-bar heavy bowie. The Kershaw Roughneck. The Ka-bar camp knife.

For me the Rat-7 or the Ka-bar,which I finally got to use this past weekend. Both excellent knives for the money.

I like the Marbles 10" Trailmaker as well as the Ranger RD9...both are made from 5160 and take any punishment you can put them through!!!

I used to have a favorite large knife...A Himalayan Imports 18" Chiruwa Ang Khola Khukuri. Unfortunately, I let my wife use it the last time we went camping. Now it's HER favorite large knife.:o:D

Odd thing is that my wife's a pretty small creature, and only stands five six. She has horrible wrist troubles from spending her adult life doing office work. As soon as she grabbed it she was able to cut, pry and hack with a minimum of wrist pain.

It also looked pretty darn sexy swayin' from her hips while we were hikin' 'round.:D

If you have the bucks, consider a Ranger RD7 ,Scrapyard dogfather or Swamp rat battle rat. I have the battle rat and it can take on anything I have a mind to. The RD7 would set you back around $100.

I LOVE my Ka-Bar 14-1/4" Heavy Bowie!!! But I use it mostly in the Kitchen as a butcher's knife!

I have a 16.5" Himalayan Imports AK Khuk.

I've thought long and hard about other blades, but I think I like this one the best.

6-7" full flat and enough steel on the pommel to use for pounding in stakes or other light hammering. Hey, that's a Rat-7, isn't it?
; )

Busse: Steel Heart, tactical satin Jack, straight handled battle mistress

Swamprat: Ratweiller, camptramp,battletramp

Hey all, thank you for posting, keep them coming. I was wondering if I'm missing something or are these knifes hard to find. I've done searches for BK7, Ranger RD7, Swamprat Battle Rat and Camp Tramp. I'm having a hard time finding a place where I can actually buy these. Or maybe I need some more search terms to describe the knives. Thanks!

I've got a rtak2 that has worked pretty well. It's more of a 10 inch blade though. I feel I'd of been just fine with the rat-7, or similar sized knife for my needs. Both of them are easy to find. Never held one, but rangerknives.com has some nice looking knives too. The rd-7 (from ranger knives) is thicker than the rat-7, if that's good or bad to you.

Fallkniven A2
Blackjack Panga
Rosarms Baby or Taiga

Justin from Ranger Knives has customer service that is second to none and turns out great blades with an almost unconditional warranty. I received a custom RD-7 from him a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier.

Heres the website:

sure machetes are nice

but I still find I'd most like to outfit myself with an axe

where (( **** )) is axeforums?

anyway, the longer the better, compromising with efforts to conceal

whatever works, I just feel like I'd have more control with a stronger weight handle distribution.
