Large Survival Knife - What do you like? How about a big one?

+1 to Justin and the Ranger knives. I'm pretty sure I could chop down a sequoia with my RD9 if I needed to :) The nice part about the RD9 is it's all function, not flash. A lot of the larger knives start looking like Rambo: First Blood. I have not had problems brandishing my RD9 in front of people yet. As much as I love, say, the Busse Battle Mistress, I don't know if people would remain as calm seeing it.

I made one today ... HSS blade , she-oak handle , slices , dices , chops , makes heaps good fuzz sticks fuzz logs too :) .. havent stabbed this thru a car yet , probably over the weekend :)

I just like bigger knives that are different , cant afford them so I make them , does that count ?

I was just wanting a bigger chopper , now I have to get me a sheath ...

Justin from Ranger Knives has customer service that is second to none and turns out great blades with an almost unconditional warranty. I received a custom RD-7 from him a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier.

Heres the website:

Nice, I'll have to check that one out. I also just learned that the BK7, the Camp Tramp and Battle Rat have all been discontinued, which is why I couldn't find those anywhere.

I'm looking forward to comparing all the different knives that people are listing.

My favorite is a Himalayan Imports WWII. I've been carrying it for a year and it hasn't let me down yet. Just need to find a better sheath for it.

Cold Steel Trailmaster in Carbon-V if you can find one. Ive beat mine for 10+ years and it still works fine

tknife , thanks :)
Its one of the most comfortable to use knives I made yet , even if it is a bit hard on the eyes . I have big hands , finding a knife that fits my hand isnt easy

Martindale Golok is an awesome knife.

The Cold Steel GI tanto is going to be my next purchase. $30 it can't be beat.

It is fun trying different knives in different situations.

I would always prefer a large knife in most any situation. Except that I would not carry a large knife in most situations.

That is really awesome! How would I go about learning to make my own knife?

Himalayan Imports is a serious contender for top choice. I might go slightly smaller than a WW II or chiruwa ang khola, and recommend their BAS (British Army Service) model, just because that 10-inch-bladed knife is somewhat more convenient for carrying and general knife use than some of the others named, which are bigger. A BAS will chop quite nicely, compared to most knives, and may be a little less likely to get left behind at home on account of weight and use-ability at other than hard-core chopping chores. That said, I love and trust the chiruwa ang kholas quite a bit.

Another decent big knife is the Ontario Marine Raider Bowie. It's got a 9- or 10-inch blade, a quarter inch thick, a solid tang, and I don't hear much about people breaking them. Advantage is you can get these via eBay for around $40-45, if you shop around a bit. Not nearly as much character as a Himalayan Imports, which is an instant conversation/display piece / heirloom, but the straight blade may be more like what you're accustomed to using. H.I. knives almost always come with a bonus little knife that goes into the scabbard and works on the little cutting tasks, as well as a sharpening steel.

If you go for an H.I., go to the H.I. forum on Bladeforums, check out the posts by Yangdu (the proprietress) with dates in the postings, and read about a dozen. You'll get a sense of when she's posting her "Deals of the day", "blems", etc., and what the going prices are. Note what time of day she's usually posting lately, then lurk on the site, refreshing your browser often. Ideally, have an e-mail addressed to H.I., containing your address and payment method, waiting for quick sending, then, when she posts, type in the specifics of what you're interested in. First e-mail she receives promising to pay the asked price wins. You can often get H.I. knives for a small fraction of the usual asking price that way, and in my opinion the blems and "seconds" are practically as good as the top-of-the-line ones (yours will get a little scuffed up once you start using it, so it's not a great sacrifice to get one where you'll have to scrub off some rust, epoxy a little crack in a water-buffalo-horn handle, or whatever.) Use with care and respect, and make sure to treat the scabbard with something to keep it supple, and you'll have a great knife to hand down to your great-grandchildren.

I have a 16.5" Himalayan Imports AK Khuk.

I've thought long and hard about other blades, but I think I like this one the best.

I'll have to agree with this as far as my "large" blades go. Even with this it takes a special blade. I have several AK's but this one by Bura just feels right.

For a user knife, Ka-Bar's heavy bowies are a good deal for the price. I'd also second Ranger Knives. I, too, recently ordered an RD7, and am very pleased with both the service and the knife I got. Then, of course, there are the famous names like Busse, but quite honestly, they're not very easy to come by and cost quite a dime, so, unless you're a collector or seriously obsessive about having the biggest name or the greatest wondersteel in your user knives, I would recommend against trying to hunt for a Busse. But, if you can find one that looks right for you easily and at not too high a premium, go for it! :)

Are you looking for a Chopper specifically or a general purpose survival knife?

If you want a chopper, a Khukri us hard to beat for the money.

If you want an all purpose camp/survival knife then +1 for the Becker Bk-7. I own several of them and have never been disapointed with performance or durability.

I've also heard good things about Rangers and Fallkniven knives.

One of my favorite survival choppers the an A2 9 inch convex blade made by David Wesner. It can handle anything I throw at it. Look him up, he does great work.

Does anyone have any opinions on the ColdSteel Recon Scout.....personal views on Coldsteel marketing etc aside !!!!

i think the cold steel stuff are really good. there are a lot of blade testing videos on youtube that you should look up. theres one with the bush man, breaking several bricks and taking very small damage

General Purpose Survival knife.

The BK7 you mentioned is nice, but it is hard to find now that they are out of production.

One other thing I've been wondering. What type of steel would I want. Seems there are soooo many options.
