Large Traditional's

I'm a fan of the larger traditional folders, the Buck 110 has always been my standard. The larger knives just seem to fit my hand better, I also use knives mainly for yard and camp work where the larger blades really work for me.
Started looking around for some other options and came across the GEC #23 and #42, ordered 1 of each, showed up today and these are some big knives, beautifully made.
Any other large traditional's I should be looking out for? Would like to find a large Barlow if someone makes one.

I don't have a lot of big knives but the Schatt English Jack at 4.25"-bottom knife- should qualify! That's a lotta Sheepfoot:D

Other biguns are Queen's English Jack with Clip master or their Mountain Man lockback or slipjoint. GEC's 81/82 Stockman knives are no shrinking violet either same with their 53/54 frame Big Jack in particular. Regards, Will

I'm partial to the large folding hunters, especially the old Schrade 25OT, or 125OT. Their big, beefy slip joints with steel that just plain works. I love them. And, they can be had pretty reasonable if you look around on the evilbay.

Case puts out a nice large folding hunter, the 6265. The large folding hunters are too large for most pocket carry. And, most times require a sheath of some sort. I wear bib overalls most days when I'm not working, and I carry mine in one of the pockets on the bib.

I prefer the steel on the Schrades. It seems to take and hold an edge a bit better than either Case's CV or SS. So, most days I'll have one or more Schrades in one or more pockets.

I frequently carry a Case 6375. It's a 4.25" closed length stockman pattern. Great knife. Big too.

That being said, it wasn't until I started hanging around here that I got turned on to the smaller knives. I learned that a small knife like the Peanut slices right through much of the same stuff because the blade is thin and can get real sharp. It also forced me to learn to sharpen freehand because that little blade just didn't fit my sharpening contraptions. Now if you are making 100 cuts a day, a big handle will be more ergonomically comfortable, but a small knife can really work once you learn.... in many ways, they can cut better than their big counter parts... in some ways not. That's why I often carry a big and a little knife.

Case made a Bradford Cutlery Grand daddy barlow in goldenrod bone. don't know if they still make them, but they were made recently so there should still some out there. I got one a few years back and they are big yet have a slim profile. good for the back pocket and for use in the outdoors.

Big and small, they all have their purpose and we each need to select according to what their needs are. That being said I can't seem to keep this Case 6375 out of my pocket. It big and sturdy and gets the job done :)

I'm looking forward to the upcoming GEC 21 Bull Buster it's a LARGE sodbuster style

The Northwoods English Jack is pretty large. Here is a Case Peanut sitting on the main blade of the English Jack.

The Opinel 13 is kind of traditional. Maybe a bit more than what you are looking for though.

That thing. I will def impulse buy one some day- although I am certain, being as foolish as I often am, to then tinker it down to a Opinel 9. I should just buy a 9.

I do love the opinel 10 for a big old traditional though.

Looking like I should not of started this thread;) You all have given me a lot more options to look at and ways to empty my bank account, like those English Jack's.

You mentioned big Barlows; Northwoods has some big Madison Barlows about the same size as the GEC 42. Blade shape on the clip point Barlow is very similar to the GEC 42 as well. Hoping Northwoods comes out with a new run of Barlows with the Sodbuster-style blade.

LOVE my GEC #42, I'm definitely a fan of the single-blade MO Traders vs. the Trappers. I'm tempted to pick another up with different scales.

Definitely check for the Old Timer folding hunter models. They are normally excellent quality, can be either stainless or carbon, and come in several different configurations. Look for the USA tang stamp to ensure you're getting an original.

I think you'd like one of these. This was my father's hunting knife for 30 years. It's better built than the average Buck or Old Timer.

The Schatt and Morgan File&Wire english jack is perfect quality. Love it!

Schrade made a monster stockman knife, the 858OT Lumberjack. Kind of hard to come by, but maybe a slightly used example wouldn't cost a fortune.

Plenty of in-between sized choices too. Smaller than a folding hunter, but significantly larger than a common pocketknife. Trappers and swing guards.
