I have one and it is a beauty. Buck has made a lot of limited edition Vanguards over the years. I wish I had more of them.

Here are all 4 of the Mini Zippers and Mini Vanguards. These were a special project for Bass Pro in 2006. Sometimes it takes awhile... 4 years 6 months between finding the first and completing the set. They are about 1" shorter overall. Front to back models 686, 687, 688, and 689. Notice they were not marked with model numbers or date codes. Documented on the 2006 Special Projects list the build quantities were 770, 750, 800, and 800 respectively.

Wasn't there also a short version made from the gut hook models that had an issue with gut hook being cut too deep, or something along those lines?

Yes, it's the bottom one.

Me? Oh No

As Greg said they were mistakenly ground with an improper gut hook and Buck modified them for sale. I bought mine from DOGPOUND77 a year or so ago.

I saw a 191 on the auction site a few weeks back like this and it didn't look right. I didn't realize that Buck actually made them that way and the reason for making them. I have learned a couple of new things on this thread. That 191 looks good.

Adding to what pjsjr has already said. A small batch of 191 Zippers made it thru without the guthooks being sharpened. That step was missed before the handles were assembled. The guthook sharpening setup could not be performed with the handles attached. Buck removed the guthook and sold them as a web special.

Early in Bucks history I remember reading about a gut hook that CJ found was too small to work well. But I don't remember the model. I do think if Buck made one with a extra extra long blade it would sell very well.
