Hi,

I am looking for a large heavy hunter which I can also use as a butcher knife. I already have 2 smaller once. One is in CPM3V and the other in Elmax. I want a knife like the Bark River Special Hunter or a Bowie knife which is around 15 cm in blade length and thicker.

The Bark River big blades are made in A2 as far as I see. Also another knife maker who is making me a Leuku prefers 80crv2 instead of CPM4V.

Is it just costs for not using CPM3V or Elmax or is the material not made for larger knives? Another knife maker I know is offering larger blades in Elmax which I find highly interesting. Would it be a mistake to buy a large knife in Elmax? And if yes, why?

Thanks,
Timur

Bark River has a number of blades in CPM3V; check the Bravo Survivor, Bravo 1.5, or Bravo 2, for example

There is a cost factor in large blades.
BRK makes different runs of their knives in different steels. I noticed in one of their recent videos that they are making some right now in Cruwear. I don't think there is anything wrong with A2 unless you really want stainless steel. Maybe check some of the retailers that keep their knives in stock and see what they have available.

Large hunter/butcher? Consider Bob Dozier's KS-7 Wilderness knife

Sleipner steel and Z-Finit are great larger fixed blade steels. When done right, 3V is very hard to beat though. Z-Finit is amazing!!

I think elmax would be fine for larger knives , it sure is rugged enough to handle chopping imo
