What is the largest functional folder anybody has ever seen? It can be factory or custom. No, the giant plastic Victorinox display versions don't count

On BA a while back I saw an Italian auto with a 3' blade. Damn thing was 72" OAL, weighed 40#, and worked!

Other than the REKAT Sifu, Cold Steel Vaquero Grande, and Al Mar Quicksilver?
I once saw a giant Frost Stockman at a flea market. I think one of the blades was about a foot long. It was made in Pakistan.
Other than that, the only massive knives I've seen are some big 5 inch blade Navajas made by several Spanish cutlery companies.

I've seen some photos in books of old Spanish folding swords, but they appeared to have blades around 15-20 inches. Nothing like that three footer! That would be something to try!

A while back I used to see available these Pakistani "Cobra" locking hunting knives. You may remember them; they had a lever latch, the blade was longer than the handle, and the folded knife fit into a cheap leather or vinyl sheath. Overall length (open) was about 17 inches.

Opinel also makes a huge display folder-
I tried in vain to get a guy in Berlin to part with one.

Didn't Microtech have a people-length Halo at a show a while ago? It worked, I think.

Largest I've owned was a 15" Italian, it was like it came out in slow motion.

Largest I've seen is a Pakistani folder a friend has that has a 14" blade. Kind of fun to snap out.

And I still can't get over that HUGE Italian that was on BA. Aw man, that thang was HUGE>..

In the factory of forge de laguiole, they have a blade sticking out of the roof of 21 meter, I think the rest is there too for showing to people, but i dunno for sure.

I do know that opinel makes a number 20, with a polished handle and a 2 foot blade.
60 cm..a little under 2 foot. (the rest of the world is metric

)
It works all right, but you can't reall grip the handle good, because it's too thick.

Navaja's can be made with blades up to several feet, but those are show knives..not really functional.

My largest foldes are a SIFU and a Opinel nr 12 (SIFU is excactly the same size).

Schmakey,
I remember a pic of Mike Turber holding a enormous Halo, the blade was at least 2 feet long. I'll go in the archives and see if I can find the pic.

At SOG, we have hanging on the wall a fully functioning AutoClip with a 2.5-3' blade (except it is make of wood). It opens and closes, lock bar works, and the adjustable clip, operated by the "thumb wheel," is fully operational.

Hi Dave,
As you know I love big folders. There's no shortage of huge Italian autos. I've seen them in just about any size imaginable including the monster Jason described. And of course the monster Halos of one Mike once had.
I have the "one off" 14" giant Crawford KFF, (what a quality piece!), and hope to aquire a Darrel Ralph "Gibbs" 7 1/4" blade Mad Max. I have another that you might be interested in. It's a very early Butch Vallotton giant lockback. It's #4 of ten he made years ago when he lived in Red Mountain, Oregon. It's got a 10" 440C razor sharp blade and is 22" overall. Cocobolo handles and full brass liners and double brass bolsters. Even though it was made early in Butch's career, it's typical Vallotton quality. It's such a monster but "walks and talks" like a very quality small folder.
I finally got a cheapie digital camera awhile back and I'll try and get up a pic of it along side my bowie bladed MM and the giant KFF.

At the NY show in March I happened past Bob Dozier's table, and he had a pretty big rendition of one of his current folding models on display, I think it may have been one of the new tab-stop hunters. It was huge, and despite the titanium liners, heavy. It opened, closed, and locked smoothly, but it was a touch too large for my hands. I don't remember the dimensions, but I'd say maybe 18" folded, on a model that usually has a 3 1/2" handle.

How about the Laci Szabo designed Rad folder made by Farid Mehr of England? I remember it was on the cover of an older issue of Tactical Knives.
