Larry Davidson Balisong

Laarry! Laarry! You're the man Larry. I've been preparing my wife for another expensive knife purchase since this project started.

Oh man, if there ever was a time to not be broke, it is certianly now.

Looks very exciting Larry!! Can't wait until you assemble those mosters!!

(Sorry about drooling all over the forum, i'll try to be more carefull next time:D )

Hmm... Hard to count them when they're stacked like that but I think I count 30 blades. Not bad for a project that hasnt been going too long. I can't wait to see what those suckers look like when they're ground and polished, not to mention mounted in a set of handles. Glad mine is at the top of that stack. BTW, the thumb serrations came out very nicely.

Those look really nice, Larry! Thanks for posting all of these pics as you make progress. It simultaneously satisfies my desire to know how the project's coming and makes it even harder to wait!

Sorry-ixpfah, blade steel is Crucible Steel's new Stainless 3V. S30V CPM. ld

The steel for those prototypes is Stainless? But they look all rusty... Or are they supposed to?

ixpfah, I thought you were just having fun with me.
Quote:"What kinda steel is that? High polished?":Quote.

What you're looking are the blade blanks directly off the Fanuc Wire EDM machine. The "rust" is only surface scale as the edm process, for the sake of simplicity, has a lot of deionized water and electrical erosion involved. For a better understanding of the EDM process do a web search on the subject, facinating stuff.
The stainless properties of carbon (hardenable stainless') occur after heat treatment. Again a great topic to study online. Lots of good info available.

So the blade material goes thru several processes before becoming that glimming, shimmering, scintillating, pointy, protrusion at the business end of your handles. ld

Yes!!!!!!! Blades are done. G-10 version in the works. Now all we need to see are the handles and we can all collectively drool.... :D

Mr. Davidson:

I did have some fun with you, but only the last sentence (High polished). Sorry for any confusion, and thanks for the information. :)

Hey Larry,

Didn't you say somethin about the price you were going to charge for these balis?

I've gotta know what kind of a whipping I'm in for with my wife...

the blade profile looks great!! I can't wait so see a finished model!!!!

Blade, The price will be released to the public as soon as the steel prototype is completed. We will release photos and a price at the same time, but as long as your wife has Everquest, you don't have to worry about her whipping you.

True, True,....

As long as I can get it to work!!!
I bought a PCI 32mb video card, but needed a AGP 32mb video card!!!
Damnit!!!
I'm back to the hardware store to spend more balisong $$$!!

Still, I'm going to have to sell some of my used "user" balis soon. To buy another computer, or parts!! be sure to give me a good price.:)

You'll find them in the usual places...

I will still find a way to pay for this Davidson Hornet bali.
I even like the sound of it!!

As long as I have newer and exciting-er balis to wait impatiently for, I'll be OK...

BTW, Tony, are you ready for your turn at Mer???
What are you gonna do???
You will "flip" when you see what he did for me!!!

Whiskey and resin balls are a terrible thing,

OK guys!
I haven't had as much as time, as I would have liked, to work on the 3D model; but, here's a little sneak preview of the blade. You will need to download a 3D viewer plug-in for your browser first.
It can be downloaded from http://www.cult3d.com/download/download.asp

I apologize for the annoying watermark on my web page, as I'm still in the process of obtaining my official license of the software to create this. Please be patient, as it may take a little while to download.

Here's the link to my page with the Hornet blade

Mike, it's not working for me :( I downloaded the plugin, but the model just isn't loading... I dunno, maybe it's my computer and maybe the lack of sleep is contributing to my incompetence. :)

I'm sorry to hear that!:( It works when I use the local version on my PC. I'm actually having trouble with the one on my web page too! Is it showing an error message in the bottom of the browser? What I might do, is just .zip up the .html and the cult3D object for you guys to download and check out on your PC.
Mike

If the first method didn't work for you, try this one. Download the viewer as mentioned before then go here.
http://www.imaxx.net/~mmaenpaa/ld_balisong_hornet.htm

When you unzip the files, make sure the .co file is in a directory named /balisong.
