Here are a couple of images of Larry fuegen's latest knife.

The words below are Larry's description of the knife. The first image is small, The second one is a nice closeup, and larger.

Here's something a little different - years ago, one of my collectors gave me an old walrus ivory harpoon head and wanted me to create a knife using it for the handle. This is what I came up with. It has an 8.5 inch carved Damascus blade with copper and 14 k gold bands that anchor the blade into the handle. The carving on the blade along with the washer and gold pin represent a Northwest Coastal area raven Indian design. The sheath is wood covered with rawhide and has 5 carved walrus ivory toggles/fetishes that represent the seal, sculpin, polar bear and unknown design. These were inspired by original fossil ivory carvings collected in the Bearing Strait. This was a fun project, and something away from my normal work.

Simply outsanding!Larry did an excellent job of bringing all the various elements together!

Once again Larry shows how to create art from steel and traditional images. He does it with frontier western spurs and Bowies, and here with an entirely other cultures set of meanings. He's working at the highest levels.

Marcel, we will duel for it from across the Atlantic. It would fit perfectly with Phyllis and my Inuit/Native Canuck and American Indian collections. Larry -- a masterpiece for sure.

Where is this guy headed! He's always pulling something out of his hat. Remarkable......................

Larry Fuegen does some extraordinary work and this is a great example of it.

He has made many knives that are my favorites in various knife publications that I have. Someday it would be great to acquire one of them:D

I don't know what to say about this knife.

I do not like it (wow - did I just say that about a Larry Fuegen knife???). It does however look very well made. The skills of this maker are extraordinary.

Kind regards,

Jos

Mr. Larry Fuegen cannot be excelled in any endeavor in art form he sets out to achieve.

Jos....there is no accounting for taste...so what I say may not work for you, but clearly, the knife is inspired by the Raven iconography of the Pacific Northwest Native culture....and well executed from that influence to be sure.

Sometimes, but not always, context changes our perception.

STeven,

Knowing what inspired a maker sure makes a knife more interesting. Thanks for this information.

Kind regards,

Jos

I love Larry's work, and I love NW Indian style design - I in fact own a Howard Clark katana furnished in a NW Coast Indian theme. Interestingly, I'm not a fan of this piece. With this said, I want to salute Larry Fuegen for his courage in stepping out of his circle of confidence in such a bold fashion.

Artistic merit? I suppose, as an art collector, I must admit it exists. As a knife I like, or a knifemaker whose work I admire, I think not.

I'm missing the point here (due to my grasp of the English language I guess)...will you please explain.

Bob, are you saying that you don't care for Fuegen's work in general?

Explain what? No reason for you to be circumspect in questioning my statement of opinion. You expressed your opinion earlier in the thread and I am expressing mine. I think that's pretty simple.
