Laser engravings on 4th Gen

Does anyone know any cheaper alternatives to the Hinderer Spanner tool? I cant seem to justify spening almost 100$ for a tiny little tool. Or if someone is selling a used one PM me please!

Until I can pick up an armorer tool I am using a #12 spanner bit for the back of the pivot screw and a 1/16 hex bit for my 3" scale screws. Works fine. In fact the new XM I picked up didn't even need anything to unscrew the pivot screw except a flat head screwdriver and thumb pressure on the back side.

Whenever I run across a Job or Hobby that gives me an "Excuse" to Buy a Quality Tool or piece of Gear - I never look any farther than Where can I go get my New Tool!
Maybe that's just me :)
Love my Hinderer Tool ! Especially after almost scratching my XM when attempting to use a "make shift" interim tool.
The Real Tool is designed to fit correctly (and snug) AND enables you to hold the tool and knife (engaged) in one hand while utilizing the other part of the tool (screwdriver) on the pivot.
Nice.

good thing it's stonewashed and (scratches) barely show!

ModifiedZ, tell me about your delrin tools, are they home made? I used to machine a LOT of delrin :D

I had an extra set of Delrin spanners for the Umnumzaan, a dremmel & some hand files worked it into shape. Its still got the Allen wrench holes if you need more torque but I did some nice file work to give it grip so I just use my fingers to twist it tight or loose. It's holding up very well.
I use the titanium armorors tool most of the time & its a precision fit but for my sand & bead blasted or anodized customs I use my non scratch Delrin tools.

I think I shall make a delrin tool, I have noticed issues with BB & SB particularly the one that had sand blasted hardware. I have the PSD tool that I like ok but I think the Hinderer one is a bit easier to hold in place. I had a steel one but I think I will splurge and get a flame ti one while they are available.

I had the spanner, but then found a cheaper alternative (a mini pry bar), I took it to the belt sander and shaved off a couple milimeters off each side. Now it fits perfectly in the 2 slots. Cost me about 2 bucks.

I will point out again that the Hinderer Armorer's tool is one of the few methods that allow you to hold the tool and the knife at the same time. For me, it's the right tool for the job.

Also, this is not the correct place for a wanted to buy post. Try the Exchange.

Use a cheap metal fork.. Bend the prongs back leaving the 2 on the end original and works like a dream

Your choice.

If you own only one and don't plan to tinker with it the decision may be more difficult. But for those of us who like to have options, the official armorer's tool is the correct way.

Gotta agree with those that have the Hinderer Armorers Tool. The proper tool makes any given job easier, and is much more likely to NOT damage what is being worked on. Just my .02

the op asked for a cheaper alternative..

this is what i have used in the past and never had a problem or cause damage to the knife.

Are we seriously talking about scratches on "hard-use" knives? Really?

Here's the deal...you can drive a nail with a rock but a hammer does it so much better...same holds true with the correct tool for any task.

Well said.

To be clear my recent comment about scratches was not directed at anyone, but a general statement.

This thread has not a lot left to offer. Armorer's tool is the correct way, everything else is just attempts at creative work-arounds. The tools were in stock in the official store last time I checked, so anyone serious about this topic should strongly consider doing it right and ordering the proper tool.

I received a brand new xm-18 3.5 Spanto 4th gen with the new laser logos the other day. I ordered directly from Hinderer and the knife is beautiful and I am very happy with it however the detent appears weak.
If i shake the knife up and down i can get the blade to engage, also the knife doesn't flip open 100% unless i use a slight wrist action. Im aware there has been some fuss lately about whether or not Rick has changed the detent on the newer 4th Gen so im curious what the deal is.

Nothing has changed with the detents, this was made clear a few times already. What you find light, others may find the opposite.

I merged your 3 locked threads. If you think that you have issue with your knife please contact me directly.
