I absolutely do not understand Busse's business model. WHAT ARE THEY DOING? Pissing me off is what they're doing. If a model is good then why discontinue it, either for a year or for anytime? And then having the nerve to say that they're doing us a favor by not including sheaths?
They're pissing down our backs and telling us it's raining. I know there are people here that can't find the cojones to criticize this bullsh*t, but that's exactly what it is: bullsh*t. Yes, it's their company and they can do whatever they want. I wouldn't care what they did if their knives sucked. Their knives are great, but the way they do business makes NO SENSE.
I which they'd cut the crap and just have a model line, and if the models are good then keep them, and if not, then don't. Is that so friggin' hard?
Batrachian,
Welcome to the Busse Forum!
I understand your confusion and frustration. This new way of doing things is untried, untested, and unproven.
Our new protocol has nothing to do with testing out new models to see which ones will sell and which ones won't. All of our models sell very well due to our awesome customer base. The entire idea was formed around being able to give our friends and customers more options and choices than are available from any other manufacturer.
As for sheaths, why pay for something that you may not like? Have you EVER bought a handgun that came with a holster? I haven't. If any gun manufacturer did include a holster, what kind could they include that would please even 50% of their customers? I, personally, do not prefer to pay for something that I may not want or use.
I knew when we tried this new system that it would be risky. Offering this many choices to the consumer has never been tried. We are running the risk that folks will hate too many options and they could run the risk of "option overload" and that can lead to heavy drinking. . . .(that's not necessarily a bad thing).
To get this in perspective, just think of the rest of the knife industry as McDonald's and think of Busse Combat as the Burger King of the group. You can "have it your way".
In order to manage this many options on this many models we can't really offer any more than 2 models per month. With up to 64 handle/blade finish combinations on each model it's like offering up to 128 models per month. Batch work is out and inividual attention to detail is in. Ask around and you will be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't agree that our attention to detail and quality control has gone through the roof with this new system. Now, each knife is individually made for the particular customer who ordered it. We have taken the best aspects of custom knifemaking and melded them with the efficiency of mass production.
Do I know that offering the new Meaner Street and the rest of our models throughout the entire year, instead of for only one month per year, would result in more sales by the end of the year? I'd have to be an idiot not to realize this. Imagine the demand for the new Fusion Steel Heart and the new Fusion Battle Mistress? We're waving off a lot of sales by only offering these knives for 4 weeks per year. Also, imagine the secondary market for you, the consumer. Do you really think you'll have a hard time selling your Fusion Steel Heart on the secondary market, if you choose to do so?
Sometimes, knifemaking isn't about the money, it's about the product. We make our knives here, in the USA, and we're having a good time doing it. We've had a lot of customers become good friends of ours through the years.
Come to a knife show and meet our friends and our crew. Come hang out with us after the show when we go out to eat, drink, and have a good time. We're a diverse bunch from Spec Ops types to SWAT team members and retirees to high school kids who all share a common love of knives. Busse customers are simply the best.
Is it the greatest marketing plan of all time? Not if your definition of "greatest" is measured in money. Is it the greatest marketing plan for offering our friends and customers more options than they'll find anywhere else and keeping it interesting for those who have been with us for years? I think so. . . I hope so.
Thanks for stopping by and be sure to come by more often. Have a beer (CBL or Root) and enjoy yourself.
