late 1800's gear for bushcraft

Packbasket, wool hudson bay blankets, capote, felt wide brim hat, flint and steel, forged skewers, dutch oven, good mocs I like dyer mocs not period but I have worn them for years, worth the money. I like leggings in braintain with loincloth, easier to keep clean and cooler. Wide leather belt to tie your belt and bags on, Possibles bag canvas tarp to make a diamond fly etc. Leather gloves are handy, candle box or tin, belt and neck knife, hawk or axe, tin cup, beer.

Nice post. looks like fun, I want to camp out this winter usu\ing 1899's style gear.

I have not decided on what rifle but black powder and traditional looking no question. here are a couple of nice ones the guy who did my bowie has on what is one of the ugliest blankets I have ever seen in my life.

Okay...I know whoze rifles and knives you're talking about! He and I are members of the Shiloh Sharps Forum also. If you're going the Sharps route then definately stick in his hip pocket for advise on rifle selection and loading. I could help you but you've got someone local. Good choice! Seriously if you're going Black Powder (Muzzleloader) or Black Powder Cartridges then give me a shout and I'll gladly help you out - otherwise you could (most likely will) make some very expensive mistakes! Don't ask me how I know...

I just picked up a traditional looking Shiloh a couple years ago. I did extensive historical research including working with some of my mentors. I'll gladly pass along my findings if you're interested.

The Sharps is a very nice rifle but take a look at the Winchester 1885 Highwall. Bit more compact action and weighs a tad bit less. Plus it is truly ambidextrous plus it won't slam fire on you like the sharps will.

CShepherd, "Slam fire" - please elaborate about your experience or knowledge regarding a Sharps rifle experiencing this. I'm assuming you shoot BPCR?

On the Sharps if you don't put the hammer on half-cock before loading it it can "slam fire" when you close the breech. Basically the breechblock raises up with the hammer contacting the transferbar/firing pin and "boom." I've seen it happen on a couple of occasions.

The Highwall drops to half cock when you lower the breech block. The new Browning Highwalls drop to full cock.

The Sharps is an absolutely beautiful rifle and a great design. I just like the Highwall better.

I am actually looking at a blackpowder Stevens 14 gauge shotgun. It has a great look ,is in my price range and is nice and tight. It is actual period but more like what the average Joe Homesteader would have used than those amazing Sharps.

I wish i still had the trapper nelson pack i used as a backpacker. It was ideal.

It does not really have to be 1870. People here in Saskatchewan used gear like this right into the 1950's.

I actually worked at a surplus store a couple years ago where we bought furs and sold traps and other gear. I got him to bring in some moras and the trappers loved them. Some of the old indian trappers said they used to use cut down machettes.

I am really into this idea.

Yes, I would say that the blanket is not period-correct, because the
trappers would probably freeze to death rather than unrolling
that thing :)
Everything else on it looks great.

People still use Trapper Nelsons today. The 'Hut Krew' that service the alpine hut system along the Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (part of the Appalachian Trail,) use Trapper Nelson packboards to carry up the 75-150 lb loads that they bring up to the huts daily. (These young college kids, male and female, have thighs as thick as my waist!) The Trapper Nelsons are the only way to carry really heavy loads in the woods on a daily basis.

You know as far as knives go, you can get the Old Hickory knives made by Ontario, from alot of places. They are made with 1095 steel and you can get them below the 10.00 mark. There the most historic made knives for the amount of money that you can get. There is no need in spending 100.00 and 200.00 dollars for a good knife. I garantee you those Old Hickory knives are as good as you can get. You get alot for a little money.

Anybody got a line on Possibles Bag (s) to round out an outfit?

Hey Quirt, You going hunting next week? (I thought you alluded to it in an earlier thread) Good luck eh?

Yep leaving next Wednesday for two weeks. Either sex deer/elk/bear/mtn lion in a very romote area. Primative style camping - canvas tent with wood stove, indian style stalking, and primative gear and techniques. I am wearing wool - no modern poly stuff for me!!!

Possible bag-lots of places do a google search and look for track of the wolf, the possibles shop, the gun works - all three of those places sell possibles bags and kits.
