late summer tarp camping

This isn't exactly your tarp setup, Siguy, but this is still a neat video, showing the Mantis net that I linked to earlier.

This is from Bushcraft Northwest, BTW.

brian, thanks for posting that video.

looks like a neat setup, but since i'm planning on using the poncho liners i don't think it would work quite as well since it doesn't look wide enough to completely enclose the head end.

i also move around alot at night and i think that i would tend to get tangled up in that.

neat piece of gear though, and at 4 ounces hard to say no to, especially for the sleeping baggers.

one thing that can help alot if you still have trouble then you can get a warm winter hat, thick socks and a thin baselayer (longjohns) and that will keep you alot warmer too.

it didn't help me a ton, since the whole rest of me was cold, but when you are looking for that last bit of warmth it makes a difference.

thats what i do, i wear a THICK 1.5" thick) tight woven wool hat (with a soft thinsulate liner to prevent going bush crazy from the itchies....:D

I use a wool blanket, a Therarest pad, and i put half the blanket under me, half over top of me (with the folded part at my back) and top with a heat tarp. Simple, light bomber setup. I sleep with my 3 pairs of socks on and my leather boots, never have cold feet and i can get up running if need be.

Great writeup Siguy!

BTW, if you want to stay REALLY warm, build a "coffin" sized fire, get it going real HOT for a few hours until there is just white ash. Scrape it all away, lay your pad on top of it and add your blankets etc. You'll be TOASTY warm for the whole night.

Simon all you needed for warmth was a dog :D I was surprised how comfortable Richard felt around you, curling up at your feet while we chatted around the campfire. He doesn't usually do that with people he doesn't know very well.

Get a dog, you get both a heat source for camping and truly a best friend

theo,
i was a bit surprised as well, i think its because you acted comfortable around me probably.

i intend to get a nice big dog eventually...maybe once i get settled in a few years.
