Lateral folder, 3D CAD visualization

It's an interesting concept. The issue with making something like this would be the material removal of the blade material. You would have to start with a lot more material to create the hinges. Also that area would need to be annealed so as to not be brittle when force is applied. Also you would need a one sided grind so that you don't have a sharp edge sticking out when folded.

I want to find a reason to hate this, but I'm struggling..... :)

The only concern I have is that the edge will still be proud of the handle when closed, even if it is only a mm or less. But that's enough to plane some skin off of places I don't need planing. :)

Perhaps (dare I say) a CHISEL grind, to get that edge right up against the handle when closed? Or mill a cutout in the handle to cradle the blade in a recessed area?

What about having the blade fold into the handle scale and fit flush so the cutting edge isn't exposed?

Like what I just said in the post above yours? :)

We aim to please!

If you came out with a severe clip-point bladed version I’d love one. A deep clip with a fine point, like on a Buck 110 or 119, is really useful for the way I do detail whittling on some projects.

As for the lock, it seems you have an idea already. But if you want more ideas, I have a somewhat weird one.

I thought of perhaps having something like a barrel knife system. I included some photos of those below. These are some old knives, but I think the overall design style is good. Provides a crazy amount of strength, an unusually comfortable grip (for a folder), and completely shields the blade from whatever may be in your pocket when it’s in its folded position.

With a modern material like G10, the “barrel” could be made very slim and could accommodate a broader knife, such as yours, while still lending the knife crazy strength. In addition, you could shape the “barrel” grip however you want, so you could position things in such a way as to make the blade sit squarely along the center-point of the barrel grip, when fully folded out. That would provide a more typical symmetrical experience.

These are easily among the least convenient style of folding knives for regular EDC use, but I figure a specialized “Woodcarver’s Model” could feature a design like this and be very marketable. A small package that fits in a pocket, and still provides a seriously comfortable and durable knife for periods of long continuous use.

I'd put the bottle opener somewhere else. I don't like the cutout of the blade by pivot. I know you want to be able to use the bottle cap when knife is closed but I'd incorporate into the back end of the handle.

I mean you'd hate for a youtuber to spine whack it and it fail right?

Also, list your HRc as 45-75 so nobody claims your knife hardness is off.

What about using magnets to hold the blade in open/closed position?

Also I kinda feel like its backwards? The tang should be on the show side when open, so you could plant your thumb right on it and have a nice (right handed) pinch grip.

I like this idea though
