I just received the Black Jack Grunt today. It made a really good fuzz stick.

At the beginning of the summer I purchased a custom knife. I was dissatisfied with it, then I traded it for another custom. Again, not for me. Finally, I got some knives that fit my needs. At this point in my life, production knives are for me.

Mike, We are still planning on checking out Santa cruz this Saturday. I will give you a call.

I should clarify that my wilderness combo is the first pic.

The 2nd & 3rd picts include my newest purchase, The Grunt. I have been using this thing like crazy since I posted it this afternoon. That knife is great. I know that sounds crazy for such a cheapie. I am totally impressed. I just cut an apple very finely.

Blackjack Grunt attributes:
This is one knife that might be the most versatile of all

1. It is small enough for a day hike
2. convex ground which allows fine slicing without sacrificing strength
3. very comfortable handle
4. Wide blade so it could make deep cuts into saplings therefore cutting like a larger blade
5. 3/16ths stock so it is stout but still very light
6. it was CHEAP CHEAP
7. Some might think that 8Cr13MoV is a liability but if this steel behaves similar to AUS8 as many claim, I think it will be a big plus.

I am curious what will happen if NOSS tests it. The was some talk that he would.
Of course, the sheath sucks but at the price who cares. I will get one but it will NEED a sharpening steel attachment because of the softness of its steel.

I'm testing it. I have the knife. I been playing with it some. It is a very nice blade for 25 bucks. It came with a very nice, sharp convex edge and I love the wide blade and big handle on it.

Good to hear psy-ops! I have an older Grunt (same as Pitdog's) with AUS8...if the new steel performs as well, than it really is a winner. It's a great mid-sized blade, and I love the profile. Is the newer one convex as well? I need a better sheath, but I wouldn't feel under-knifed with the Grunt at all...if fact I've used it side by side with Fehrman and Busse; you won't find too many knives that perform as well as the Grunt for the price. It's a great bargain and I'm glad it works for you.

There were several in that Blackjack/Warner series I thought looked quite effective. Without a more rigorous search of my archives I can only turn up this one though. I wonder if any of the others will be re-released.

Not sure if it was one of the Blackjack/Warner series but...

AWAC!!!!!

I can only hope that they bring back the AWAC.

That triad realy is nice! hows the Kershaw Outcast for you?

Edge retention?

Splitting?

Handle give youy blisters?

any other notes on it?

i have one, but so far i havent gotten it out to use/test it. i was going to carry it rather than a backpaxe by Gerber (the very short handled one) and want to know if its a good alternative. Thank you much! -- Eric

Noss, I am glad to hear you like it. I wonder how long it will last?

Rock6, I think it is you who owns every awesome knife made in the past 10 years? I am jealous.

I was really reluctant to purchase the Grunt because of the cheap price. Unconsciously I felt, a survivalist type should have a "better" blade. I went searching as we do. I purchased the some of the ones people talk about and they didn't work for me. The Grunt is kind of like an F-1 on steriods. All along that was what I really was looking for. After this summer, I won't be purchasing a knife for a while. I will be starting a program and probably won't have too much money or time. That means This some I had a mission to find a few good ones. The Grunt and the Outcast are the ones for now.

Borrowed time, The outcast works for me. It is big enough to do some serious cutting but small enough to carry. I am curious of how the D2 edge holds up and sharpens back. That is the fun part of buying new knives. The mystery.

Rupestris, That AWAC looks great! It has the same handle as the Grunt but a longer blade. I will be giving a full review soon on both with picts.
