Okay, I didn't know where else to put this, and I just had to show it off, so if its in the wrong place, sorry.
This is my knife forge made mostly from junk. The forge itself is just half a cinder block wrapped in wire to keep it from falling apart more, a steel tray made from an old wheelbarrow, with a wire grate, a layer of rocks and crushed brick in the bottom to keep the fire off the plate, a steel stand made from a shipping crate, a blower out of an old gas furnace, some flexible alluminum ducting, a push-button dimmer switch to control the blower, a 3 inch ducting T, a cap for the T, and an old extension cord. Total Cost: $30, mostly in the ducting and dimmer switch. Right now, I can only use some scrap hardwood pieces, but I can't wait to throw some coal in there. (cue maniacle laughter.)

Looks better than my first forge!

Why not get some good charcoal and use that? Don't use matchlite or anything like that... just good ole chunk charcoal.

Chunk charcoal isn't sold around here, and the wood is free, leftovers from my handle material, which is also free since I get it off of old crates. I'll have to wait till spring when I can get some cheap charcoal to use. I've used it before I added the blower and worked great. (I would use an air compressor before.) I don't know exactly what species the wood is, but its very hard and burns pretty hot and becomes like chunk charcoal in the burner.
