These are D2, annealed, 1020 C 45 min soak, plate and forced air quenched (Mete and Nathan suggested), 190 C snap temper and -24C freezer... Going for 200 C 3X 1 hour temper.

I'll mirror polish them. The biggest is a kitchen knife for a customer, designed by her. I wold prefer it would have a meaty handle but she wanted the handle thin and decorated... No problem for me ..

The small edc blanks are for another customer and one for my friend...

Preliminary inspection shows a good HT but I'll test it after tempering cycles:::

These are first test group BTW discussed on a previous thread : http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=585776

Oh my,
With the proper tools (new kiln + forced air + plate quench + controlled tempering kiln) and gathered enough info, this lot shocked me. I realized I had no idea of capabilities of D2. There was negligible decarb (ground away in a min) and the grain size (as far as I observed the burr - saw somewhere that the burr geometry at the edge while grinding is partly related to grain size) is pretty small and the wear resistance is incredible.

Tried to clean and sharpen. To put an edge was nearly impossible, after an hour it took an edge, cuts 2mm brass rod with no edge deformation. While sharpening with fine arkansas I had no idea how it could get that sharp, just touched the edge to feel the sharpness and there was a deep cut on my finger tip even i didnt press, just touched. There was a tiny blood pool on the floor .

I'm as happy as a pig in the mud. Thank you guys, without the experience gained from this forum I wouldnt go that far... I'll polish the cut decorated kitchen knife tomorrow, hopefully will post some finished pics soon...

Glad it worked out ! You would do better if you used a good ceramic stone or even a diamond.

I'm trying to find a source to get a diamond stone but no luck, just arkansas and some coarse stones I could get. Maybe I have to try internet shops like amazon, ebay etc. But shipment prices are ridiculously high...

Just finished the first. Hand rubbed to 400 grit and buffed. She said she doesnt like mirror finishes. You had to see her, she fell in love with this knife . I'll make a matching sheath (the ornaments on knife are Ottoman style) This knife is the hardest steel I've encountered. Spent hours to get rid of scratches (there were just a few). I Decided to finish to 400 grit before HT in future...
Sorry for these photos. After I get the payment I'll spend the money to upgrade my registration and make a lightbox. I had one but my parents used it (not intentionally, it was just a wood box covered with a white cloth) to light a fire last winter :) Then I'll post good pics on "makers Gallery"...
