Bura is making khukuris. He may not be able to swing the hammer but so what. In a lot of shops here in the US the hammer swinging is done by a machine. He's using helpers to do the heavy work but he's overseeing everything. I just got in a couple of M43s and some other stuff with his mark and it's Bura work for sure.

The secret to success is knowing when to pull the steel from the forge and telling the helper where to hit. Then knowing when to pull the knife from the forge and how to pour the water. Bura did not like to use helpers but I guess when you have no choice you do what you have to do.

I am not at all surprised. I knew Bura would not give up and would find a way.

It's good news, really -- two pluses. Bura is producing and this is going to make him feel good and his helpers will learn more from him than they would working with any other kami -- but knowing what a taskmaster Bura is the helpers will pay the price for their education.

Not like that, you idiot!!!!

Would that I were young and single, I'd sure pay that price today.

Some of the best lessons learned in my life, were from hard a$$ instuctors. Smarted at the time, but well worth the experience.

That when I was a young smart alec airman and THOUGHT I had learned every thing. Had an old Master Sergeant that squared me away pretty quick.

Now, I am still learning and will until I die!

Excellent news - you can't keep a good man down. Whats the bet he'll be churning out khuks like no-ones biz !!

Got my first taste of Bura, the Taskmaster, my first five minutes at BirGorkha. As soon as Gelbu and I walked into the shop Bura raked Gelbu over the coals because Gelbu had not alerted the shop to my upcoming visit. What Bura told Gelbu was essentially this and you'll have to forgive the language but this is the way he talks as do most kamis -- gets the point across: You rotten little ba$tard. Here's the man who sells our khukuris and sends us our money and you brought him here without allowing us to give him the proper greeting he deserves. Get out of here you little a$$hole and bring Bill Sahib back tomorrow and we will have the shop and ourselves prepared. Because you have no manners you bring disgrace to all of us.

You must remember that Gelbu is the boss, too, so you can imagine how Bura talks to his helpers.

:)

This is good news!!

After hearing some really bad news about someone I grew up with health-wise the other day(she has 3 kids and may not survive breast cancer:(), I was happy to hear some good news for a change!

Great news!!

He may not be able to swing the hammer but so what. In a lot of shops here in the US the hammer swinging is done by a machine.

A lot of customs that sell for top $ and a lot of the very expensive Japanese kitchen knives are made with the aid of power hammers by master smiths. There has to be advantages to using an apprentice who works with the smith every day and is learning what must be done. Maybe absolute output is less, but the power hammer doesn't eventually grow into a well-trained smith, it just slowly wears out.

I'M glad he's doing better!I think i have one of his 18" ANG KHOLA before he left at the beginning of the year.:D

In some ways we owe Bura for the opportunity to help him. Without his illness we wouldn't have reached into our hearts and pocketbooks for a good cause I expect someone upstairs is keeping track of.

What we did for Bura, or learned from helping him may be the feather that tilts the scales of our souls to swing to the positive side.

I've ( seemed like always ) been humbled and embarrased when an act of kindness I've done is responded to. And scared by how much difference it makes to another when I've almost brushed the situation off and could so easily just ignored it.

The forum is a better place for his illness and returning into health.

Good news about a good man. I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to adding some more of his blades to my collection.
