I spent several hours in the shop today (even though there is a Nor'easter blowing) and got this done. Still have to do some clean up and polishing.
I was commissioned to make the sterling top for the pottery piece going to the Queen. It is an exact replica of one belonging to Pocahontas circa 1620. I still have to make another top for the sister piece. The cameo is coming along nicely, too. I have carved one test piece, and am starting two more. I'll mount the best one.
About this top:
I needed a top piece of 12 gauge in the shape of a big flat ring. (It joins the inside and outside pieces together.) Instead of cutting it from a 3"square sheet of silver, I took some round 4 gauge wire and welded it into a circle. Then I forged it out into a flat ring like a mason jar seal. Saved a lot of time and money ! The inside and outside are tapered sleeves ,forged to a taper to match the pottery lip. The handle guard and beaded edges were fun to make and fit. Weighs several ounces.
I'll know more next week about the Queen's visit and such. Everything's in a mess of security right now. No one knows anything.
