I spent several hours in the shop today (even though there is a Nor'easter blowing) and got this done. Still have to do some clean up and polishing.

I was commissioned to make the sterling top for the pottery piece going to the Queen. It is an exact replica of one belonging to Pocahontas circa 1620. I still have to make another top for the sister piece. The cameo is coming along nicely, too. I have carved one test piece, and am starting two more. I'll mount the best one.

About this top:
I needed a top piece of 12 gauge in the shape of a big flat ring. (It joins the inside and outside pieces together.) Instead of cutting it from a 3"square sheet of silver, I took some round 4 gauge wire and welded it into a circle. Then I forged it out into a flat ring like a mason jar seal. Saved a lot of time and money ! The inside and outside are tapered sleeves ,forged to a taper to match the pottery lip. The handle guard and beaded edges were fun to make and fit. Weighs several ounces.

I'll know more next week about the Queen's visit and such. Everything's in a mess of security right now. No one knows anything.

Beautiful work...can't wait to see the whole project completed!

Now Thats Cool!!!
I have to make a ring out of a Sterling Silver spoon and I Hand to ask you how to do it.:o

Yesterday morning the TV newsman, Joe Flanagan, came and did "Joe's Job" on me. He filmed me working on the piece and did an interview. It will run the morning before the Queen's visit. This Friday they are running another TV video journalism piece (unrelated to the Queen) on me, about converting heirloom jewelery into new modern pieces.

Dave, How did the ring turn out?

As a royalist from a british Commonwealth nation. Thanks very much for looking after my Queen like you are :D

Thats good work there.

OK, I have to now swear you all to secrecy.

Some S***T is starting to get kicked up here. The TV personality, Joe Flanagan, called the Jamestown folks to get an interview from them and ....
Well let's just say they went bonkers. They think this is supposed to be a huge secret....Not the actual item.....but the whole thing of giving the Queen a gift!!!???

A lot of people know about this.It has never been touted as a secret before now? Joe and I understood that they wouldn't want the actual finished gift shown on TV until after the gift was presented, but a special TV feature about the item being locally made should be good PR for the 400th celebration....RIGHT??? They were planning on running it the morning of the visit, only a couple of hours before the actual unveiling to HRM anyway.
Well they want the TV station to not show it until the day after the event.....Now that would be a bit pointless. I haven't heard back from Joe Flanagan yet as to what he wants to do.(They are journalists, and can run what they want to, but try to keep from creating problems). I am going to Williamsburg tomorrow morning to deliver the piece and see if I can get any new info. The problem seems to be too many Chiefs, and not enough Indians.

So don't tell anybody....Mums the word.
And remember, you didn't see anything.

I removed the photos anyway, just to be safe.

a secret from who? Believe me, the queen will be fully breifed that theres a gift waiting, theres enoug protocol officers involved at all levels in something like this orchestrating who does what and when.

A hint, watch how she holds her handbag :P one way means she's having a good time, but if she shifts it so she's holding it a different way at some point, that means she's bored and wants the hangers on to manufacture an excuse to let her leave.
