Latest Reincarnation Of My DHIII EDC

I will have to agree this is a good thread.

I recently gave a good friend of ours one of Don's folders. He is beyond proud for owning it.

He carries it when the occasion arises. Sunday's and special events. (with a gleam in his eye he pulls it out and says take a look at this).

It's good to see one of Don's knives being used on a daily basis.

I carry my hanson, its even got a couple of pits in the o1 (i think) from who knows what. Its got "freckles" on the interior side of the back spring too. I don't mind, i even sharpen it freehand with sandpaper to keep the convex edge.

I got it today and its what I wanted exactly. The blade opens and sounds a little better then it did and the action and lock up are better then when new. Don built it extra strong for my hard use. I was wrong about one thing.. He did have to etch bolsters and reanodize the liners because they got ruined when he grounded the handle material to shape. No biggie, but the knife will have to start getting new marks to catch up to where it was. There is still a huge scratch on the blade.

These are my User knives currently. I'm gonna go post a new thread about them and ask to see yours!....

your KNIVES of course!

As a knife user with a taste for custom knives, I love to see a knife such as yours. These top makers are masters of design, not just aesthetics. Using their pieces allows a deeper appreciation of the skill and engineering that shaped each piece.
Should every knife be used? No. Should some? Absolutely.

Good post, I especially agree with your bolded statement.

I think every knife maker is proud to hear stories like this with one of his knives. Good thread.

I'm glad to hear you feel that way Bruce as I have two of your knives that I would like you to replace the Stag handles with Ivory. When can you do it?
Just Kidding ;) :foot::D

Damn, Jon. You are like me in my cars modification quest; I can't leave well enough alone.

BTW: You Garssonized™ :D that knife. Twice. (It's a well-known description around these parts. Consider the etymology of the word.... ;))

I have no problem with a white Micarta handle.

Correction Coop, in order to be classified as "Garssonized" (or even better "Jonized") Jon would have had to have made the modifications himself
as opposed to Don expertly doing them. ;) :)

Does "Garssonized" involve a bench grinder?

It involves a belt sander.
It is not a hack job.
I have done MAJOR work to knives, handed it to the maker and they have often(embarrassed when shown before and after photos) not been able to tell the difference.

It isn't "pimping", it is things like fixing off-kilter grinds, egregious blade-to-handle ratios and side-to-side play in slipjoints, as well as very sharp edges on handles.

It came about once I got the tools to fix problems, and the skills to do so.....and it was the result of waiting 3 months or more for a maker to get off their butt and consider a 10 minute job as a priority rather than something to keep getting pushed off.

Some makers can be counted on to fix stuff quick....John W. Smith, R.J. Martin, Bob Crowder come to mind....they are a knife person's person, also Warren Osborne......MANY other makers.....not too much.

I'd rather do it myself....that way, I only have myself to blame for a screw up and the drama is kept to a minimum.

Best Regards,

Its not Garrsonized, except for the need (feeling) for change. I don't possess those skillz. The few times I tried on a knife myself I destroyed it, rendering it Branded. :/

I have started to sharpen them a little better recently... but I still suck at it.

Coop- White micarta is good for the soul.. as are many things white.

To those who appreciate and "get" this thread, I am glad to contribute. Many of you post your knives in action and I wanted to show that a slim fancy gents knife can have some fun too.

Funny thread... Both renditions look wonderful and I can't decide which I like better.
