I've thought about this situation a little more. It aroused my interest because I'm just starting to buy the occasional custom.
Seems like both parties learned some stuff of value here...
As a knifemaker, one might make clear beyond a shadow of doubt whether refunds will or will not be an option. I get Ryan's point about this knife being more than just a standard custom item (made with the general public in mind), but he might have said something up front like "Okay, with all these customizations we're doing, I can't offer you a refund if you're not happy with what you ordered. I will work with you to tweak the knife if you're not satisfied, however." Maybe he did. Certainly, he's making the offer to rework the handle now.
From a buyer's view (and this is the valuable lesson for me), one might get ALL the facts up front before confirming an order. As in... Is there an evaluation period? Is a refund an option? Can you modify the knife if it doesn't fit my hand the way I imagine? Will that cost extra? etc. It's pretty clear that Spearz did not get all the facts straight on this deal in advance.
Just communication lessons here, but good ones, I think.
