The proper name for a spike knife is a "Newbury", as in Newbury Train Songs from the song "Lukenbach, Texas". No different than a Bowie or a Warncliffe.

I was thinking more of cord, rawhide, or similar lighter material. Help keep the handle weight down. Wonder if you could make it rectangle before twisting it - that might lighten it even more and free up more room for handle materials, etc.
