Robert, there are a handful of reasons... Initially, I was looking for something that would offer greater wear resistance than 3v, without giving away so much toughness that it became worthless for impact performance. I'd heard some pretty good things about Vanadis 4 Extra (in fact, I think many of Dan Keffeler's competition blades were made of it), and the chemical composition of V4e and CPM-4v are nearly indistinguishable, separated only by the particle metal process utilized to manufacture them. V4e is not what you would describe as 'readily available'. On one of my trips up to visit Niagara Specialty Metals, I mentioned my interest and acquired a couple pieces for testing. I think through further tweaking my heat treat I can improve its performance even more, but even the results I'm experiencing now are fantastic.
