Lawnmowers, whatcha got?

Yeah, John Deere makes some good stuff too.

On a John Deere note, we have a 85-hp John Deere 2950 with a 1018 10' mower deck that I just spent 5 air-conditioned hours mowing our farm/ranch with this week. I guess I mowed 25 acres in that time. It's great to run over 4 inch thick trees and look back and see a pile of mulch behind me.

Hilly terrain and rocky soil limits ground speed though...

Y'all take care,
Steve

I guess since I started this, I might as well contribute :D :D

I was this close to laying my money down for a green one, when one of the guys I go to church with asked if I wanted to buy his mower. He was moving from the country to the city and did not think he need it anymore. Anyway, I got it for 1/4 what he gave for it new 6 years earlier. It is in another class totally from the JD. Although I still think JD makes the best equipment out there, this is an awesome design and quality. (I do have a JD plate on the front of my truck and my in-laws run all JD equip. on the farm.)

It's a Woods 6160 with a 16HP Briggs engine, either 44" or 48" deck, (I can't remember which) and vac attachment which I haven't used yet and probably never will. I can mow my .9 acre of land in 45 min with this.

This is not a pic of mine, but the same model elsewhere on the web.

Hell, yeah it's got a drinkholder... and a radio. Car stereo with cassette actually. We were gonna put a CD player in it but it'd probably skip all day.

Actually we got it used for $16,000 about 5 years ago. Typically needs about $1500 worth of repairs every year, but it is worth it for the ag exemption on 150 acres.

Talk to y'all later,
Steve

Well I don't know! My dads neighbor picked it up at the side of the road and went over it,cleaned it up and sold it to me for I think $40.That was at least 15 years ago, might have changed the plug maybe twice never had changed the oil just add more:D .Lost compression this year had to reset a valve sleave but she's up and running again.

my lawn mower is a mark one, model 0 version, his name is mike, lol.

i always gauged success by the ability to have the lawn mowed!!!

ahh in all honesty, i have a bad back (rheuem arthritis) and i am one of the nutz who actually enjoyed mowing the yard, always did it late PM when it was 100+ degrees, a good workout. BUT w/my back, cant do the mowing anymore, still do some gardening but the mowing KILLS my back......last time i did it i thought i was gonna never get outta bed........so just lite stuff in the yard for me,

hopefully, my son will start doing the duty by nest summer, 13 then...but, on second thought, will prob cost me MORE for him to do it lol

I'm running a Honda Masters series 6HP walk behind with the hydrostatic transmission. Cast aluminum deck, with Honda's QuadraCut mulching system. Honda makes the best small engines out there on the market, bar none. Low emissions, and easy to maintain.

Anyone see the brand new X Series from John Deere?? Those are some SERIOUS garden tractors. Liquid cooled engines, some have 4WD, others 4WS. Price tags, though, are like that of a sub-compact car

I'm with BigDeeeeeee - my dream machine is a Walker type ZTR rider. Several years ago I had the chance to try out a Scag Turf Runner (predecessor to their Cougar series, and basically a Walker type machine). Once you get used to it, those things are fun to operate!

An 18 horse Craftsman rider with a 42" deck. Need to rebuild her after the season as she is somewhat overly fond of oil, i.e. 1/2 quart per 2 hours of run time. Manual shift, no power steering but it does have a hydraulic system for raising/lowering the mowing deck.

 Great googly moogly! That is a lot for a small air cooled engine. You ever think about using Risolone (sp?) mixed in with the oil to control oil consumption?

Toro 6.5 hp personal pace w/ electric start. Had to sell a knife to buy it tho :(

I have mowed yards commercially for over twenty years and the latest I run is a 25 horse walker GHS. If you like to pick up the grass it is THE mower. I also believe that a good commercial walk behind 36"- 52" mower would last the average home owner forever... well almost. They are a great balance between exercize and speed. I also have a john deere 850 with a brush hog mower that just got done clearing about ten acres of trails and fields at my deer camp- I wish I had the enclosed cab, the dust and bugs are bad without it when mowing 5 ft tall weeds.... but the scenery was/is great !

Dexter - Thanks for the tip on the oil additive. I may try it but I am definitely getting the beast rebuilt at the end of the season.

It's blueish (apart from the rusty spots), has some kind of ridiculously loud engine (could be the muffler is dead) and weighs a ton. The handle and wheels come loose every now and then and I have no idea when the oil was changed! It's kinda cuts/beats/tears the grass and if someone was to check it for how much co2 it spews into the atmosphere, I would be in jail for the rest of my natural life!
However, it belongs to my father-in-law, I get to borrow it for as long as it runs and it gives a great workout! (weight and dead wheelbearings add to the force needed to push the darn thing!)
