I am not sure what is needed to put a lanyard hole in a knife handle and have it flared on each side. Is there an insert that screws together, or do you drill hole to accept a brass tube flare the wooded hole out, glue brass pipe in and run around it with some kind of tool? Any insight would be appreciated.

The cheapest way to do it, not necessarily easiest is to take the smooth end of a drill bit that's smaller than the liner, then kinda hold it against the edge of the tubing and run it around the rim to flare the tubing out. It's really easier to do than describe. It's kinda like stirring a glass of koolaid and you need to get the sugar out of the bottom and the handle of the spoon is running around the rim of the glass....

Ahhhh I'm an idiot.

you can also buy the tubing, then get screws that are a bit wider at the head. Take the screws, grind off the extra length of the screw, and take the knife, put it in a vice with wood blocks, or other padding. The flared head screws go in the opposite side holes, and you tighten the vice down, which flares the tube ends. Like a press fit. you have to have the handle material relieved around the tubes, so you don't crack the handle scales.

Use lube in the tube and on the screw heads to make it slide and not split the tubes. You can get a very tight press fit this way that will add strength to the handle. If you want, you can take stainless tubes and flare them and not even use epoxie on the handle scales and they will still be very securely held on. Then if you ever want to change out the scales, you can simply drill the tubes out, and repeat the process again.

Here is a link with photo's and a step by step that explains it well I think.

I saw that one too, but was not sure if he wanted to go to the trouble of making an actual tool to do the work. I should have linked that one as well.
