Layoff at Case.

I bought my son a Case Sodbuster Jr. at the local ACE Hardware. (He was eyeing that new Boker Elliot sent me. I had to plant a decoy. ;) ) They have a few Case knives that are several years old (ie: old stock, just hibernating on the shelf.) I told them that if they'll re-order Case brand knives, I'll find a way to help move the current stock for them, through recommending to friends, getting my Scout's fathers to buy them as first knives for their sons, etc.

Summer camp's coming, gotta have a good knife for that, you know . . . :)

thx - cpr

That sounds like the situation I would like to find....a dealer that really doesn't keep up with stuff...but still has that dealers arrangement.....maybe ask to manage that end of the business.......who knows what it could turn in to????

Last summer, I was going to include a stop at their factory in Bradford, PA as part of a motorcycle trip. I had to abort the trip due to a problem at home and never made it. I was trying to think of where to go this summer, and I guess I'll be making another try at Bradford.

This thread was the impetus for me ordering from NGK blue and brown Peanuts, thus doubling my Peanut arsenal.

I hope this is not going to impact upon this year's Bose/CASE collaboration...as I'm trying to save up for it.

 Good idea! Maybe we should have a "Support a traditional slipjoint maker" day for a mass purchase? I think all the makers deserve our support so I went and ordered a Queen knife last night even though I really don't need another one.

It's not much, but every little bit counts.

When we heard of the Case layoff we immediately got in touch with our contacts there--to discuss what Case knife we would feature on the next available cover of Knives Illustrated Magazine.

That's GREAT, Bruce. What model did y'all decide on?

I was eyeing a peanut at the Tractor Supply Company in Westminster MD. I believe its time to get that little number.

Blues, thanks for the update. I'm going out after work today to buy a case for me, and both of my sons. I was glad to read that they intend to bring back those layed off employees when they can.

Considering that Case is the big dog when it comes to traditional knives in this country, one would have to wonder what's going on behind the scenes in the handful of other companies we have come to know and support.

In some situations, the parent company may be able to keep the subsidiary afloat for a while. Others may not be so fortunate depending on circumstances.

From what I can determine, the Titusville, PA, companies are still doing quite well. In fact, is seems that Queen is having trouble getting enough product out of the factory fast enough.

It is true that the situations at Case and the smaller companies might be considered " apples and oranges". (For example, I don't think that Queen has more that thirty people in the whole company.) That having been said, there for a while, Case kind of "post-'64 Winchestered" itself in terms of its quality. I can't imagine how that set of developments could have helped its current situation.

A recent ad from Queen/Schatt and Morgan had an advertisement wishing everyone Merry Christmas, I believe. Knife World? Anyway, I thought I saw more than 30 people. I'll have to dig that issue out.

Can you imagine the problems they'd have getting product out the door if they took the time to put an edge on their knives!? :p

Seriously, though: Glad to read all is well (it seems) with them.
