The recent hammock threads reminded me that I had a mesh hammock and tarp (shelter) in my BOB that I've never used.
So... I grabbed the dog and some supplies and hit the woods. It was a nice day, but hot... about 96 degrees. After hiking for a while I found a cedar and oak thicket that looked like a nice shady spot to construct my shelter and hang my hammock. I only had to clear a couple of limbs... no problem for the Tram's shaving-sharp convex edge.
I put up the tarp first without any real difficulty using cordage, stakes, and some bungies. The funny thing I noticed was that the poly tarp seemed really attract the heat. I don't know why, but it was actually hotter under the tarp (still... the dog preferred the shade).
Because of this, and no possibility of rain, I opted to hang the hammock in another location, next to the shelter.
The hammock was GREAT! It is very comfortable and relaxing. (gratuitous knife porn shot)
I found this piece of cedar on the ground and thought it looked a bit like a Heron's head... so I carved it a bit...
After sharpening his beak... I decided that it would make a decent fork, so I carved a bit more and wrapped some cord around it... all in good fun.
But, alas... all good things eventually come to an end...
What a GREAT DAY!
