I just purchased an LB-7 at the Flea Market. It has "Dixie Collection" engraved on the blade and 247 stamped on the bolster. The handle is made like a Papa Bear LB-8 that I had years ago. I can't find any information on the knife and had bought it to use but now think I should put it away. If anyone has any information on it I would appriciate it. Thanks

Your knife was made in 1980, so what you have is going on a quarter of a century old. Good start. Also from a now defunct company, another point in making it a collectable.

According to the reference in front of me, Bernard Levine's (he has a forum here in BFC) your knife is what is called a "private edition knife", another word for a kind of commemorative knife, I don't know what company or corporation had Schrade make your knife for them.. Is there a 'Dixie' company somewhere? This is the kind of question that makes collecting both interesting and confusing.

According to Levine's book, there were four sets of two knives each. And the value placed on them was a guess... an estimate by the authors... of $35. Of course if you were to find someone who was missing your knife from his set and he wanted to make it complete, you could probably get more. If the number is stamped on the bolster, it is probably a serial number. Out of how many? We don't know. Schrade did not keep good records on those private editions. So there is yet another question.

If it were most of us here, we'd call it a collectable and enjoy answering all those questions.

How about a pic?

Hopefully, one of our more Schrade-educated members will chime in and add more or correct me if my references were off.

Welcome to the forum!

Added: I just checked another reference by J. Bruce Voyles, and he mentions one set of two knives; both stag handled, a hunter and a lockback, with 'Dixie Collection' etched on the blades. He states value of $65.

Thanks for the info. I just got it yesterday and haven't cleaned it up. I had looked at it a couple of weeks ago and I believe they had the other knife to the set. It was a fixed blade hunting knife but I guess someone must have bought it. Maybe I will get lucky and they know who has it. Here are some pictures of it.

Thank you, Smabe. Everyone here enjoys seeing a differnt Schrade. I envy you, as you have lots of info to go in search of (who commisioned the knife, what the other's look like, original packaging, ect)

Keep us inforumed and don't be a stranger.

Schrade didn't have a whole lot of info on these knives. I do know that there were approximately 10,000 of the first set manufactured, and they were manufactured in 1978. (Can't find any records from Schrade to back the claim that there were 4 different sets). This set marked the introduction of both, the 144 and the LB7 w/ staglon handles, as well as Schrade's 75th year in business. The following year, the 144UH was added to the regular line of Uncle Henry knives, and in 1982, the LB8, which is the LB7 with Staglon handles, was added to the Uncle Henry line.

From what I can tell, the Dixie Collection was sold to three customers: Parker Frost, Orgill Brothers and Smokey Mountain Knife Works. I have a good pic of the set, but I'm new to this, so I haven't quite figured out how to send it yet.

I'm new to this too UH Fan, but from what I've seen, you have to be a paid subscriber to post a pic. You can e-mail it to SWG or one of the other subscribers and they can post it for you. Or you can put it on an online photohosting site and add it that way from the insert image icon above the post. I tried photobucket, but got a message that it was full, so I couldn't post pictures there.

Thanks Codger. I'll just keep playing around until I get it right. In the meantime, if anyone wants the pic e-mailed to them, just let me know where to send it.

To post pictures I use space provided by my ISP and upload with FTP, or I use www.tinypic.com (tip from Phil) which is free, does not require registration and has a very simple interface.

Once you have a URL for the pic you put it between
tags and it will show, for example if the picture can be seen at:

You would type:

Thanks UH Fan. While searching the web I found that Smokey Mountain Knife works has a current line made by another knife company called the "Dixie Collection" it was sold as a set. I emailed them to see if they had any record of selling a collection made by Schrade. Haven't got an answer yet.

I went to get the other knife to the set and of course the guy that bought it won't sell it. So I found an LB-8 on ebay and bought it. Guess I will have to keep looking to find the other one to the set.
Thanks again

Keep an eye on EBay.
I saw 2 of these sets a couple of months ago.
Went in the 80's.
