i have quite a few LB7s (~15) and have just "won" an LB8 (providing seller alters his excessive shipping charge) "Made Expressly for Hoffritz".
having searched "LB8", i cannot find a description which allows me to know how this knife differs from an LB7. handle material is an obvious difference.
are there any other differences ? and, does the above "Hoffritz" blade etch reveal anything about possible date of manufacture ? ebay pic. is poor quality and tang is not visible, but i think it is pre '04. thanks, roland

Do you have any LB7-UH's M.I.B. or even possibly the knife in mint condition, (pre 79 w/staglon handles)?

The LB-7 has Rosewood handles, the LB-8 has Staglon handles. The two knives are the same pattern.

Some of the early Staglon handled ones were stamped LB-7.

That's the one I need. I have LB8-UH's w/staglon handles and bunches of LB7-UH's with rosewood handles, but the one I need is a LB7-UH with staglon handles to complete my LB collection except the LB4-UH ofcourse. I also need a LB8-UH with Nickel Silver bolsters and a LB7-UH with Nickel Silver bolsters. I just lost out on one.

i have an LB7 with N/S bolsters. i guess my "best" is a 4 pin LB7, factory condition, with papers and white box with sleeve (with price tag $29.50), serial #53938, which would mean first year of production (not necessarily calendar year), probably 1978.
most of my LB7s are 4 pin with serial #s, lightly used. a winter project is to "tune" them up and give to friends, as Schrade knives are sorely under represented in this part of Canada.

Is it in good shape? Would you want to trade or sell? For the LB7-UH w/Nickel Silver Bolsters that is.

it's a neat knife because it has 0032 etched on the face near spine of the right front bolster. there are pics of it in an LB7 thread somewhere in this forum. it's one that i am keeping. roland

So is any Staglon handled LB7 knife, automatically a LB8 with a LB7 blade? That is, with the exception of SFOs, no LB7 ever had Staglon handles?
And, if so, would a serial number not make much sense, as it would not compare to either a LB7 or LB8? Or would it give a time frame of being the same as the LB8s, since it is an LB8 frame?

This is a quote from Robert Clemente's 2003 book titled "A CATALOG HISTORY OF SCHRADE KNIFES" From pg. 11 sect. E line #7
"The first LB7's prior to 1979 had staglon handles and looked like the LB8's; soon after the LB7 with Fibron handles was made, and that is the model that was introduced in the catalog in 1979.

So an LB7 in a "sharper idea" box, which was 85-86 to 2001, would be a LB8, even though it say LB7 on the blade?

Ron, Robert Clemente also states there were only limited quantities of LB 8's produced in the last years of the 1990's...."and near the end of production on the LB8,LB7 blades may have been used to make the knives and this would account for LB7 blades on LB8's".
There are so many examples of Staglon LB8's with LB7 stamped blades that they are by no means rare. You see them regularly in the Gift Box series with another knife and the Guarantee Certificate invariably refers to LB8 even though the blade is LB7 stamped, so Schrade regarded them as LB8's. I dont know that any staglon produced LB 7's prior to 1979 looked exactly like an LB8 staglon marking and cant recall even seeing one.I have Delrin scaled LB7's in different colours. In a sharp idea box a Staglon scaled LB8 with LB7 blade marking would therefor be an LB8 because I reckon you will find a LB8 Guarantee Certificate if the contents are complete. Now the LB8's did have different sheathes I recall.......no just joshin ya mate!! Hoo Roo

As I said a long time ago, and still stands true today.... LB7s are confusing, and now I have to add LB8s, though I am beginning to understand them.

are all LB8s 3 pin ? and are the LB8 serial #s part of the same sequence as the LB7 #s ? (same knife, just different handles), or are the LB8 serial #s unique to themselves ? i now have LB8 # 72377, "made expressly for Hoffritz".
roland

We need to remember that Roberts book is based on the catalog publications.
The LB8 was in production a few years earlier that the catalog.
In 1978 4255 LB-8's were made and shipped.
Anyone wanna guess if the LB7 blades were used on the 1st LB8's?
Not me.
:D

No not all LB8-UH's are 3 pin. I have seen very recently a 4 pin LB8-UH !! I can't answer any of your other questions. I'm not informed enough on any of that.
