Leaf spring knife I made

Did you heat treat the blade? If so, how?

As far as looks - that is exactly what many of the old traditional knifes made by local folks would have looked like 100 yrs ago, and many folks still like the "rough" look. I'd say you succeed nicely if the "rough" look is what you are looking for.

It looks almost exactly what my first knife looked like back in 1961. Try to work on shape and finish a bit. A rustic look does not mean it can't be more precise and finished better. Take a look in The Gallery at some of the Brute-de-Forge knives by Nick Wheeler, Salem Straub, and others and you will see what I mean.

I assume you are a youngster and the info in your profile is just kidding around.

1st off, how fellow Imgur user. Did you HT it? I'm still learning everything to, and the number one piece of feedback I'm getting is HT your knife to see it to completion. [link to non-bf vendor removed.]

Haha yeah I am. Thanks for advice.

If you ever want to be taken seriously, change your profile info to reflect the real truth. Saying you make your living as a professional bladesmith selling knives when you are on your first blade or two is not going to make people think well of you.

Nothing wrong with your first knife here, and I am sure you are as proud of it as I was of mine. I will post a photo of mine to show you that I am speaking from experience here.

I did heat treat it. I quenched it orange and tempered it yellow. Much better then my other knife were I forgot to treat it and I had the handle on already. So I stuck it in the forge anyway. Part of the handle burned. But it hardend. Then I tempered it but not enough and I tried to bend a warp back and it snapped.

Yeah your right, most of the stuff on it though was right about me though. But I don't sell knives like I made it sound. And Havent been doing this for very long either. o far I've sold only railroad spike knives and hatchets. I changed it.

Thank you

Here's one of those pics, just in case some folks are not clicking the link.

I'd say, spend a lot more time with sandpaper and various backers, and put some work in learning to blend with whatever grinder you may have.
You're off to a good start.

Quenched at orange would likely be too hot for a good HT. Tempered at yellow, I assume was using the steel oxide colors, which would be about right. You want to quench at around 1475-1500F, which is just about one shade redder than non-magnetic.

The stickys have a lot of info on HT and a search will pull up many threads on back yard HT.
