OK, had a thought cross my mind today.. (rare indeed:D)

I used to be into old school VW's and remember when I was going to buy a double cab pickup from a guy.. I read a little about them and did you know that an old aircooled VW had a greater payload then the American trucks... I don't remember numbers but I know this was fact..

So my thought is, why not leaf springs from the old VW bus'?? They're made in Germany as well..

Anyone??

Wait, what? The mercedes trucks in Nepal/India aren't 4-6 person double cabs - they're true workhorse TRUCKS (closer to semis) - generally old stuff from the 60s and 70s. The people over there are very poor and no one owns a car/truck capable of only carrying 4-6 people and a bit of cargo. It just isn't practical nor affordable. They take large trucks and retrofit them for transporting a lot of people or goods... if you're going to get from small town A to large city B, you're either going to be hitching a ride with 30-40 other people or hitching a ride with a whole bunch of livestock/goods (unless you're rich).

Simply put, we don't have kukris made of VW leafsprings because they didn't really have those over there... at least not the ones you're talking about.

Know what? It really doesn't matter. Unless you are getting them from a real crappy bargain basement car like a Yugo or Zil, the springs are probably 5160 anyway, and even the crappy ones are probably 5160. Since they are going to be heated, forged and then heat treaed again by the kamis, even that doesn't matter.

They used Torsion bars like a tank setup , east, west. not like a Dodge north, south.

The hippies or their VW microbus? Either way it would explain some of the dead spots on a few of the edges I have gotten:eek:

I don't know about the Yugo, but you're wrong about the Zil :D... just sayin'

Dan the spots sharpen out. Personally I blame the hard compacted newspaper Auntie packs them in but I know she does it to avoid skewering our beloved postal carriers:D

There used to be one parked along VA Rt 123 near Lorton Prison a few years back, Bill. Where are ya in VA.?

I live in the southwest mountains, near Virginia Tech. There is a VW importer/exporter down the street that always has lots of old VW buses in his yard. Now I just need a few kamis to come over from Nepal and I'll be set.

Easy on the Hippie Jokes kids... you've all seen the pix of me in the yard wearing Tie-dye. I am not likely to be used as any sharpness tester unless the Kami wants a nasty cut of his own. Hippies come in all types and we all have the same sorts of ideas, we just don't all think the same way or feel the same about how to get there. ;)
