Lean-To and Reflector

That's impressive! That cattail bed is almost totally snow free.

Nice work.

If you replaced the fire reflector with another lean-to, would it be possible for two people to stay dry and warm, with both people facing the fire? Sleeping and fire tending could then be done in shifts.

We talked about that very thing while at the Meet. Snow and Koa are going to continue to improve on this shelter. I am sure they will post more info and pics.

Very nice. I really like the way you guys found a perfect dead fall to use, then used no cord, only what the environment provided

It would probably work if the wind direction were parallel to the two lean-to structures. If the wind direction were perpendicular to them, I would expect some smoke problems in one or both. Of course, a totally still night would be perfect for that setup.

The wind changed directions several times on me with the one sided shelter. What I found was that even if the smoke was coming directly toward me it would rise just above my head. There was a 5 minute period at one point where I was battling the smoke directly in my face. This is where I yelled out like a girl "I got smoke in my eyes!" Then one of the seasoned experts from yonder replied: "Well move". Bit of an inside joke there in case anyone was wondering.

Hello koa, good to see you over here. You know me by a different name on another..(your) forum. It looks like you had a great time out. I have been thinking about building something similar in the woods back behind my land. There is a tree fallen in almost an identical shape.

I put 3 uprights in the ground and leaned the other logs on them. It was dark and we were in a hurry. Not perfect, but it worked well for one night.

Won't reflect the heat at the shelter as efficiently that way...but it does still reflect heat and it causes you to burn fewer calories building it that way. In a survival satiation that could well be a viable trade-off but in a completely vertical reflector the secondary set of up-rights doesn't have to be driven as deep as the first. If you build wind breaks across the ends connecting the shelter and reflector in a rectangle shape you'll hold in more heat, and spend less time with smoke in your face.

Still, it's a great way to make the shelter, I like using bark shingles when I can find it in pieces that large.
