You can really learn a lot about someone by just seeing their knife. I constantly read people's facal expressions, posture, accesories, etc. and I notice a lot. My whole family on my father's side aee good at reading people. Well, ever noticed a person's knife? Think about it. What type of person carries around a Cryo and who carries a SAK? A utalitarian is more likely to have a multi tool than carry a Sabenza. A wood handle is more show, while a darker synthetic leans more to a concealed blade. An inexperienced hunter is going to have a 12" blade while an experienced bushman, has a knife with a 4" blade. Do I even have to talk about a Tanto blade?Pocket clip or not? Is that a Barlow in your pocket, or are you happy to see me? The guy that carries three knives receives my affectionate term, gear queer. A gear queer is someone with the flashiest, not too practical and "coolest", new gear. I can't be the only one to notice these things, right?

I happen to carry a Mini Griptillian, with black scales and an OD paracord lanyard (about an inch long). What kind of knife nut are you?

I don't follow. Suppose the guy carries a Mini-Grip(easy 1 handed opening knife for EDC), an SAK(to use around people for whom a larger folder might be "scary", as well as for the additional tools), and say, a Ka-Bar TDI as a self-defense weapon. None of them are flashy, none of them are the "coolest", none of them are new, and (depending on one's views on self-defense), all are practical. So he carries 3 knives, which according to your statement makes him a "gear queer", yet by your definition of the phrase, he is not.

What is a "utalitarian"?

I've noticed you can also tell a lot about someone by how they post on community forums

That was meant more a joke, but I undersrand where you're coming from. I persnally only need one knife, and it can do anything I need it for. But someone that is carrying 3+ knives when one can be used, is that necessary? Also, why is everyone so worried about self defense? Does everybody live in Compton or something?!(again that is a joke)

I meant to type, utilitarian. My bad. What are you trying to imply about (my?) postings?

the rat is everywhere, and taking names.. I love this guy !

Your original post sounds like you're trying to judge people solely based off the knife or knives they carry. Some days I'll carry one, the next I'll carry three. Heck, tomorrow i could carry six of I wanted to. You should see some of the collections some folks around here have. Hundreds upon hundreds of knives. Could you base the "type of person" they are off the random knife they have that day?

Gear queer? What is this nonsense? I don't carry three blade but I know people who do and think of them as true knife enthusiasts.

Not neccessary, but sometimes useful. For me, I live in Texas, I could pull out a Cold Steel XL Voyager and most people wouldn't care. But for some people, they sometimes go or work at places where there are people who gasp at the sight of any fast deploying knife, so for situations like that, something like an SAK is extremely non-threatening and will be viewed as such by even most of the scared of knives crowd. Yet at the same time, that person might need a knife they can quickly open and close 1 handed, and in that event, an SAK is not sufficient. So no, those 2 knives are not, in fact, used for the same purpose, that would be one reason to carry more than 1 knife.

And "everyone" isn't worried about self-defense. But some people DO live in Compton, or various other high crime cities...and murders, rapes, muggings, etc don't JUST happen in major crime zones. I don't carry a knife for self defense myself, but some people want to be prepared for that situation, just on the SLIGHT chance it happens. I mean, I don't expect my house to catch fire either, but I still have smoke alarms and a fire extinguisher, even though I doubt I will ever need them.

You can't tell as much about a person as you think by the knife he carries. No more than you can by the car he drives, the boots he wears, or the computer he uses.

If your asking can you tell somebodys personality by the knife they carry then i would say no . I carry a sak because the law says i can't carry anything els lol

I've been in Compton recently. It's not as bad as it was in the '90s.

I suppose one would have to determine your personality based on which SAK you carry.

ahh well a tanto blade isn't really meant for practical bushcraft.
Unless you plan on seppuku or stabbing megatron that is.

So what do you read from someone wearing a red hoodie , cargo pants , timberland sand boots and carry a *sigh..... fanny pack on one side , a KA-Bar TDI on the other?

At first I thought you were implying that the type of knife a person carries reflect their personality.....then it went south from there.....south compton.

I get the drift, but some flaunt their stuff, and some don't. The 'gadget guy' may not always show off, and the 'tacticool' dude might not necessarily show his hand though. And we all know the best ninjas are never seen nor heard, even in the quieter parts of the mall. I'm sure a person can kinda 'read' another by his/her stuff, but other aspects like posture, grooming, eye contact and general observed behaviour can also speak volumes.

I don't have the time nor am I qualified to be making arbitrary and capricious judgement of people I don't know. Caleb M. you must be special.
