Do you have your own tools or are you looking to learn on someone elses, before making the plunge? I only ask, because, if you already have a small shop set up, head on over to the tutorial thread and start reading. You can learn just about every aspect of the beginner education. The next part is application. GO buy you some known 1084 steel, Aldo at njsteelbaron.com has some of the cheapest 1084, and it is a well known steel. Easy to HT and quench ( Canola oil at 100 degrees) Also, there a many tried and true recipes for HT and Tempering for it.
Then get out there and start working on a simple hunter type knife. I do not know if Aldo will ship up your way, but give him a shout and see, his customer service is excellent.
Having a mentor out there will be an invaluable resource, but most people are self taught. Everyone has a different method in the shop and they use what works for them. Time and effort will tell you what you like the best.
I wish you the absolute best of luck. Happy Forging.
