So I did some shooting today.
Shooting means dirty guns to clean. :D

So I got my rifle cleaned, but my cousin was still cleaning his, so I stuck around and kept him company.
I field stripped mine so there was hex keys nearby.
Nothing elso to do, so I cleaned my Sebenza.
Obviously, I didn't have my CRK grease there, so I used "Hoppes Lubricating Oil".
This thing is exponentially smoother with oil VS CRK grease.
Like.....ALOT smoother.

Any of you guys use oil?
I'm not real sure that I'm gonna use the grease again now that I know the difference.

When I did own a Sebbie. I used the CRK grease. I tried rem oil and it worked smooth at first. But the grease was better as it would not affect lock up. And would stay in the washer holes to keep lubricating. If you use very very little. It will be just as smooth. I worked on alot of these for handles and found the slower ones were gunky and the owners used way too much.

I've used Rem Oil on my Sebenzas. Works great in a pinch, and it's much easier apply a drop of Rem Oil than disassembling the knife to apply grease.

Been using Elna sewing machine oil for years on all my knives including my Sebenza. With time the washers tend to polish the blade to an almost mirror finish that really helps with the smoothness.

Good to hear I'm not alone. :)
I find that the CRK grease is also a pain to get in there.
I end up using too much almost every time I try.
I find that it DOES attract lint also, so well see how the oil holds up.

Ya know, I've never been one to lube up my blades. I may have to look into that oil.

Is the Seb all you carry now?

I only use Sebzoil on mine. It is the only lubricant that has small enough molecules to get into the extremely precision ground clearances on my Sebenza!
I just hate having to drive out there to buy it. .....

Just kidding, I have only used remoil or 3 n 1 oil, and I feel that as long as you provide some care and maintenance you will be happy with the results almost any way you go in regard to lube.

Sebenzas are good knives and deserve to be treated with care.

Never figured out why knife people use grease like that. Go into any gun forum and you'll figure out that most don't use grease because it attracts grit. Same in a knife. Use grease in the pivot area, and carry it around in your pocket and use it and it can attract grit. Grit mixed with grease is an abrasive, and it'll wear things out.

Typically, I clean my blades as follows:
1) Loosen up pivot so there's space between the bearings/washers/blades/scales
2) Spray out really well with brake cleaner if there's no materials it'll be bad with. If there's an incompatible material, I'll use WD-40.
3) Let dry
4) Lube with a GOOD gun lubricant. Typically, that's CLP, Weaponshield, M-Pro 7, or GunSlick
5) Tighten and adjust the pivot back down

The new gun lubricant/cleaners out there are a heck of a lot further along than remoil or the other junk. They don't attract as much grit as grease, and they stay where you put them unlike remoil that just runs out.

And every once in a while I completely disassemble to completely clean/inspect. It's mostly just because I'm anal and I like to inspect everything every once in a while.

Definitely. All day every day. And plan on carrying it forever. :D

Very nice. I hope to see how it wears over time.

Haha what is that, Ecuador?!

Oil vs grease? I like grease but it's messy. Grease is thick and sticks to the metal and doesn't dry out very fast. On the other hand, oil is runny and will dry out in a relatively short time and some oils I've tried actually form a shellac-like residue when they dry. Both attract crud over time.

I use grease on autoloaders and oil in revolvers. For knives, I use neither except for a little oil on slip joints or non-stainless knives. 'Course if the maker recommends a certain lubricant--like the Sebenza--I'd use what the maker says.

id stand out just as much in ecuador as much as in japan. being a 6'5" 245lb red blooded American really makes one stick out haha.

as far as the oil vs grease debate, i used Tetra gun grease for years before i bought my first handgun and upon using it i noticed it was gumming up horribly on the slides and was actually holding moisture in against the metal and causing rust!!! so i went back to oil. for me i use this stuff called drip-free oil. its like a penetrating oil at first and runs through everything for a few seconds before the carrier starts drying then its a nice no run oil that really stays where its needed.

my experience is not in sebenzas as ive never had one or even seen one in person nor heard about it before becoming a member here but i do know this oil works fine in everything from KOMO CNC routers to air tools to what have you

Accidentally got off on the "wrong" exit up there one time. Was driving my wife's bright yellow bug. Needless to say, we didn't fit in...

Got out of there in a hurry.

Either that or Gary Indiana. Not sure.

Good stuff that Rem-oil. Synthetic and will not gum up over time or be sensitive to temperature extremes.

I use BreakFree CLP for firearms, knives, just about every steel tool I use. It is Rem-oil on steroids, easily found at most sporting goods stores and gun shops. Not expensive. It is a good cleaner-lube-and corrosion protector (CLP). My Zaan works fine with it.
