I bought a nice tang stamp and proceeded to stamp a batch of blades that were waiting for heat treat. The stamp bounced the first time and made an ugly scratch. I figured I just didn't hold it well enough, but it happened on the second blade as well. Then it dawned on me, I was doing it on the anvil and the rebound was causing the stamp to bounce!

So, my tip for the day: DON'T STAMP YOUR BLADES ON THE ANVIL. USE A PIECE OF MILD STEEL PLATE ON THE BENCH.

That's it. Now I have to do some fancy regrinding to clean up the booboos.

Take care,
Brook

Brook, I've actually had the opposite experience while testing my stamp. It seems that my anvil, with a 4 lb hammer, is the only place where it doesn't jump around and get a double impression. Difference in technique maybe?
It's too bad you had to find out what worked for your stamp on some good blades...that sucks man! Hope you can fix 'em! -Matt-
