I bought a nice tang stamp and proceeded to stamp a batch of blades that were waiting for heat treat. The stamp bounced the first time and made an ugly scratch. I figured I just didn't hold it well enough, but it happened on the second blade as well. Then it dawned on me, I was doing it on the anvil and the rebound was causing the stamp to bounce!
So, my tip for the day: DON'T STAMP YOUR BLADES ON THE ANVIL. USE A PIECE OF MILD STEEL PLATE ON THE BENCH.
That's it. Now I have to do some fancy regrinding to clean up the booboos.

It seems that my anvil, with a 4 lb hammer, is the only place where it doesn't jump around and get a double impression. Difference in technique maybe?
