Learning to carry slip-joints (again)…

I bounce back and forth between traditionals and modern knives. I have narrowed down both types to only the ones I carry the most. That means my Case/Bose Tribal Spear, Case Swayback Jack for the traditional side and a few Chris Reeve Sebenzas on the modern side. The interesting part is that even my small Sebenzas now have the clips removed so they can ride in the bottom of my front right pocket just like my slipjoints. Only my large Sebenza is clipped to my pocket.

So who makes a one handed opening slippie with pocket clip?

How about two that look like slippies on the outside but are linerlocks? They are the Case Mid-Folding Hunter and the Case Trapperlock.

Started with Case 25 years ago. Moved on into Benchmade/Spyderco/Microtech/Emerson/CRK etc. Lately have gone back to the traditionals; got a
Trapperlock I really like and a couple of GEC knives which are interesting. The traditional knives seem to do more of what I need a knife for
these days. Cause a lot less fuss in the bargain as well.

Yeah, I love my new CS medium Voyager too. It booted out the Skyline for my EDC.
I don't have any problems with what you guys are saying, but as far as I'm concerned, it's hard to beat a small Cold Steel Voyager. Small, light, and they lock.

Back when all the decent bikes were 10-speeds, I just didn't ride bikes. But when mountain bikes appeared, I found I could ride in comfort, without my head staring at the road below me and my ass cranked high into the air. Oh, and let's not forget the skinny tires that required asphalt to ride! I could no more go back to slip joints than I could go back to 10-speeds. I'm sure there are guys and gals out there who love 'em, but I'm not one of them.

Same with slip joints. I don't like the way they snap open and snap shut. When I was a Boy Scout, I remember when my blade got embedded in a piece of wood I was whittling. I pulled it out of the wood and it immediately snapped shut on my fingers! I still remember my parents taking me to the doctor to get my hand fixed. The doctor told me it happened quite often and the knife was taken from me and my dad replaced it with some knife called "Case" or something. Pretty little thing. It had a snappy blade too. It's still in my jewelry box with my cuff links if you want to see it. Only when locking knives appeared did I begin to get interested again. My favorite knife is a 5-inch plain edge CS Voyager. Nice polished blade, serious uses, light weight, decent lock and nice springs as well. Nothing like a Buck 110 which can snap back and cut your arm off at the shoulder!

I don't like having to go back and forth and come up with hypotheticals for what type of knife i'll need during that day every morning, so I just carry both.
I keep a larger one hand opening folder up front clipped in my "wallet pocket" for bigger tasks or if someone asks for my wallet and i want to give him a surprise;)(Tim Wegner/Blade Tech Professional Hunter S30V/G10).
And i keep a traditional slippie in my back pocket that actually gets more use! (Gene Wiseman front pocket shadow D2/G10).
I realize it's a "front pocket design" but i carry it in my back pocket, but I'm crazy like that!:p
PS.
I also have a GW "back pocket" but its HUGE and scares city slickers as much as my tacticals.

Like others have done in the thread, you dont HAVE to choose, if you feel a "lacking" or emptyness in your pocket when carrying a smaller slippie, YOU NEED MORE KNIVES ON YOU.
ENJOY EM ALL!

Carried this modern/traditional combo yesterday...

I have always had a slippy and often carry a SAK and a modern larger folder on me. recently got rid of my red plastic fake SAK for a SAK pioneer, love the proper feel to it and the handle scales. It is nice having a more civilized knife on you, although im thinking an Opinel stainless collar locking knife would fit that duty well enough and be a more useful knife to me.

although ill miss the bottle opener :P maybe ill just have to carry three knives.

You might be interested in the Victorinox Rambler or Manager models. Great little keychain knives; both feature a bottle opener...

Hi folks -

I always carry one slip-joint in my left front pocket, and a one-hand opening knife, typically a titanium frame-lock with pocket clip in my right front pocket.

The slip-joint is my Victorinox Waiter, never leave home without it, and the companion is one of my rotation.

I most often use my Vic when at work and there are people present who might not appreciate or may be intimidated by my larger, more modern knife.

I do feel the need, and often, for a knife that I can pull out and deploy for use with one hand.

Many times when I need to cut something open, I am already holding the item, be it a large bag of soil, mulch, or what have you, and it is natural to just flick out a knife - make the cut and then put it back in my pocket.

At work, for cutting up cheese, or opening up a can, I have my Waiter ready.

If I was not a knife affection ado, I would likely just have my Waiter with me.

I "grew up" carrying a Buck 110 or 112, and most of my friends did the same. Back in the early 70's, it was common to see folks walking around with a Buck sheath on their belts.

I guess I have never heard of someone cutting their arm off with a Buck, and I have never seen a Buck lock fail, but most of the people I know that have Bucks (or locking knives in general) are careful enough to use them properly.

best regards-

mqqn
