Great forums for newbies!

Several posts have mentioned a leather belt for their 1 X 30 belt sanders. Anyone know where these can be purchased?

I really recommend Tru Grit for all your belts. I use a 1x30 for sharpening knives and the final step is a leather belt with Tormek paste.

Pop's has Surgi-Sharp leather belts for 1X30. Mine works just fine for my el cheapo HF belt sander.

Thanks for the help.

I've also located a website with a 1X30 leather belt , http://www.trugrit.com/belts1.htm .

About the HF belt sander.

It looks to me like the diameter of the main pulley is about 6 to 8 inches. At 3400 rpm (which is what the user manual claims), that works out to a belt speed of (about) 90 to 120 feet per second. Isn't that kind of fast? I was thinking of sharpening an axe with the thing, and I don't want to overheat the cutting edge and ruin the temper. Does anyone cool the HF belt with water?

There are some good posts on this web site about overheating, BTW (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/870728-Sharpening?highlight=overheating).

Thanks for the input.

I'm no expert by any means, but I do keep a cup or bucket of water nearby to cool whatever it is I'm sharpening. Haven't tried cooling the belt with water.

My leather belt dulls my knives. No matter what angle or how light I use it. I went back to stropping by hand and like it better. I may try one of these above.

I remember only a couple years ago it seemed Lee Valley was the bees knees for 1x30 leather..

Now however it seems google will you give you an appetite for destruction...

ENJOY :D

FTR: you're using pressure, don't use 'any' pressure with mechanical device:) and you knives will be fine..................
